luso have you installed a driver for your modem in linux? If it isn't linux-compatible then you'll need to set it up through a virtual serial port, but it is preferable to use a driver as the performance will be much better. It would be helpful to know the exact modem you are using.

You need to install a driver. Thats why its not being recognized. What is the model of your modem?

uhhh You need a dial up modem. How else do you think you're going to make a connection to dreamcast ? You need to connect a telephone line from the dreamcast modem to a PC dial up modem.

If you have a connector for a telephone cord on your laptop then it has a dial up modem. IT is probably integrated. Therefore, you should proceed through this guide as though it were a PCI Modem. Sorry for the confusion. Go back and read through the steps required to set up a PCI modem.
