Well, a Japanese dude was trying to fashon a BBA with off-the-shelf PC parts comprable to the actual hardware of the BBA.

There has been some work on creating an IDE interface with a Dreamcast and running a network card through a PCI slot.

You will need to translate the site though.

RETICON wrote: My main concern for not having a BBA is because of its limited availability here and in other parts of the world. Why pay over $100 for a BBA when a USB modem is anywhere from $15 - $50 depending on the company.

What I think would be the best outcome is if somehow we can utilize the serial port on the Dreamcast for a 3rd party modem, but that's quite the stretch, but I think that would be the best-case scenario.
Excellent point. You can get a USB conexant modem on ebay for under $10 that should work great on a dc-pc setup. It would be especially easy if you could create the Java program to handle all the communication; in theory that would be the best dc-pc server out there.

A homebrew modem that uses the serial port would be interesting but indeed difficult. My advice is to invest the time into programming the java dc-pc route since pc modem's are cheap. Overall I'm sure whatever is the easiest would be the best route.

Anyways, I apologize for pressing the online discussion since it won't be included in the first game; I'm glad you are focusing on the game engine first. It would be great to see the game become a success, then you could use the engine to build many more awesome looking Dc games ;) .

USB modem is the answer for those who do not have one.

ok, so it should support both 33 & 56k modems in stead of the bba; don't forget half of the dreamcast playing crowd lies in europe & we didn't get the 56k

I'm sorry Mazone, we didn't not explain the concept of a dc-pc server; You don't actually need to have dial up internet service. You hook your dc up to a modem on your pc and it uses it's broadband connection. We have some guides here that fully explain how to make one. But if they do include the program with Tahi; it would be even simpler.

I remember trying to set that stuff up once, but it seems Vista doesn't like it all that much (or maybe I just screwed up ;))

Greenman made a guide to use a virtual machine with it but you don't need that if they make the program that does it all for you.

I have my DC-PC server running. Be sure you have a "A" modem or else you'll need a voltage line injector.

Needs:
PC:
MS OS with a live broadband internet connection.
VMware Player (from cnet download so you don;t have to fill "things" out).
Linux Ubuntu 8.0 or greater (the ISO).
A voice modem (internal or external).
The guide.

DC:
Browser disc (to set up the DC internet connection).
Type "A" modem.
Phone connection between the Dc and the PC.

Bob Dobbs

It can be wireless thats what I use. Type A modem is what you need unless you want a lone voltage Inducer. OC explains what you need very good: http://dreamcast.onlineconsoles.com/php ... cwin98.php You need an American Model A modem. PAL doesn't work.
