No, I don't have Internet in VMware.

Where do I hook up my PC with its internal modem? I tried to connect it to my external modem that serves as the ISP in my house, through ethernet. Didn't work exactly.

All I need to know is where to hook it up with my ethernet cable.

Well before you do anything you need to resolve the fact that you have no internet in VMware. This means you cannot download gnome-ppp to test if your modem is detected. And it also means that even you did connect to Dreamcast there would still be no internet going to it. You computer should share internet to the virtual machine in VMware which then in turn will share internet to Dreamcast through the Dial-in server.

The first thing you should check is whether or not you have a firewall on windows which is blocking VMware from accessing the internet.

So how are you using ubuntu?
are you using it in vmware or as dual-boot os?

Crunchbang is not going to have any advantage over using Ubuntu for this. Its just a matter of preference. Almost any linux distro will work as I've stated in my original post. Kingbuzzo wrote that guide after following mine. Its pretty much the same thing, however with some details left out because I am frequently updating this guide in an effort to cover all the issues people are having and to make it as user-friendly as possible.

How exactly do I allow VMware to gain access to my Internet?
I do have a Norton antivirus program running. I just never tried to allow programs to gain things Norton blocks because I've had no problem with this before.

Yes thats right, it should be a bridged connection. If you try to use "NAT" what happens is your Dreamcast will connect to the virtual machine, but internet will not be shared to Dreamcast.

You can try disabling Norton temporarily to see if that resolves it, but I'm not sure how to set it up in Norton to allow internet access. You'd have to ask someone else who is familiar with it or check google.

I guess that would mean that I have to take my computer over in the room where my external modem is, so I can hook it up with an ethernet cable to the modem itself.

I'm having trouble understanding what you just said. 56k modems can't be connected with ethernet cables could you clarify what you mean.

And if you're asking whether you can connect your PC modem to a phone jack in the wall and plug Dreamcast into another phone jack in your house, then no you can't. You would need to connect the modem to wherever the phone line comes into your house and in doing so this would render your actual landline and anything else which uses rj-11 jacks in your house completely useless in doing anything other than connecting your Dreamcast.

Not the Dreamcast's modem. (I think I'm using a 33k due to buying a PAL DC).

If you want to use an external modem you can choose between a USB or a Serial modem. A serial modem will be easier to set up. Check the guide again for specifics.

So the voltage simulator came in and it looks nothing like the photo showed (even though it said it wouldn't look like anything in the photo)
its basically a 18v adapter with a phone cord at the end and with a little more inspection it has a 47 uf capacitor and a resistor soldered into then covered with heat shrink.

Not worth buying.
Just make your own, its simple.
