ah! Well, so, just to recap what i need to use Dremshell and RetroDream:

1) BootCd + Card Reader reader: is this ok? https://www.ebay.it/itm/114565692528?_t ... %3A2047675

2) the DreamShell 4.0 RC 4 + Boot Loader.zip file downloaded from the official web site. And then i suppose i have to replace the DS folder with the latest present into this link: https://github.com/DC-SWAT/DreamShell/releases/tag/V4.0
But in this video (march 2021, not so recent): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToWqIDf15PQ there is a megapack with all the files needed. I don't knwo if i can use this megapack and update it using the latest DS folder (4th of october linked above..) in order to use the latest Dremshell version...
The guy into the video also linked a card reader+cd from Aliexpress only for 10$, i hope it works..
Is it also possible in your opinion to update Retro Dream too? I checked here the lasted version: https://github.com/Cpasjuste/retrodream ... /tag/3.0.0 but i don't know where i have to put the .cdi and .bin files into the microsd.

thanks

Owners of a MODE - how have your experencies regarding firmware updates been?

Have there been issues (bugs, annoyances, ...) - and have there been timely updates for those then? How's the process? Simple?

good compatibility is possible only when using the HDD mod, if you are not ready to make it, then it is better to get GDEMU

only 1 fw update so far. was incredibly painless to do.

one annoyance is the cover database as there's no way for the community to add to it from what I can see so you can find some games don't have a listing, e.g propeller arena. it's a small thing but if there was the ability for the community to add what was missing then the blanks would be filled in pretty quick but it looks like Terraonion have that locked down. the last full database release was in July as well so I'm not sure how often they'll update that.

ah, really? :( I checked this compatibility list here http://dreamshell.infos.st/, even if i have a Dreamcast Jap, i hope that this list, referred to Dreamcast PAL, is more or less the same for a japanes console... but i dind't know it is referred to an HDD support  Does it means that a lot of games don't work properly using a microSD?

I would like to try if my favourite games work properly also with microSD: I already have a microSD reader and i need to burn the booCD. I have 2 options: burn with Imageburn the bootcd (only provided in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToWqIDf15PQ), or the .cdi file provided in the DreamShell 4.0 RC 4 + Boot Loader.zip pack provided into the official site (http://www.dc-swat.ru/page/dreamshell/). What do you suggest?

If they doens't work, how can i use Dremshell/Retro Dream using an external HDD instead of a microSD card reader? Is there a quick guide to do that?

thanks

No lot of games dont work correct you have to mod a lot to work proper might as well get a gdemu if you want no fuss.. there is about 45 games i know of that work 100% i have had to remake a lot downsample music remake the gdi to get others to work as you said correct..

Using modding a dreamcast to use a IDE is major project ..

Serial port can play some games retail but not the main use..

Not that hard to use should got a CD with the reader use that.. all it does is boot the files on the sd card.. unpacked on root for a formated sd card dont use mirco sd card use fullsize one..

Running 100% now on Sd card reader serial port after some optimizing

If you dont feel like being hobbyist and finding out how please get a gdemu..

Can play all Atomiswav games and tons of homebrew with out burning a cdr all the time and a lot of retail games ... what do you expect for $15.. and also you have to put in the work.. It's a hobby hehe..

Serial port is about as fast as cdr but better seek speed. CDR retail games are downsampled and hack to run on them.. There not native format GDI files.. Or best way to play a proper dreamcast game..

Run non modded full bitrate exact GDI images with only 600kb a sec your going to have problems..

CDR is not proper format the releases you burn on cdr are chop up down sampled and slower loading then a real GDROM DISK..

All the old burned CDI released for a cdr where modded to suit the lower speed MEDIUM..

ah ok, so if i want not only atomoswave but dc games too, it is better to buy a GDEMu, it has a bigger compatibility and ussually i don't have to fix games in order to play them correctly. Usually GDEMU runs alll games in .gdi format, without fixing them, is that correct?
I found this tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ah0hEvz5Pbg&t=176s useful to add OpenEmu and games into the microsd, i think it is quite updated

I plan on buying one of these new clone GDEMU's because it supports firmware updating.
