Hey I just registered and this is my first post, I just want to throw my two cents in as a relatively recent retro collector that is very price conscious. I'm 18, started with a PS2 in like 2000 and have been an avid console gamer ever since. I was a "modern" console gamer exclusively with a handful current or near current consoles of the time til about 2009 when I decided I really needed an N64. I played them all the time growing up but never had one of my own. I went to a secondhand store we have here in the southwest called Bookmans and bought an N64 with a controller for $30, Golden eye for $10 and Bazjo Kazooie for $15. This was when I started realizing retro was the way to go. Right before that purchase I was debating whether to get a 64 or Skate 2 which was $50 for PS3 at the time and instead I got 2 great games and whole new console and saved $5 (I eventually bought Skate 2 later and it became one of my favorite games).

Now at 18 (probably the prime demo for PS4 and XboxOne) I'm not even considering entering the 8th generation. Why? Prices are just insane. PS4 bundled with one game is $450. $450! Do you know what I could do with $450 on the retro market? ALOT! Prices have gone up since I bought my 64 and I now see Bookmans selling them for $50, even selling original Xboxes for $50. But if you know where to look the retro market is a gold mine that's always going to have a game library that dwarfs any current gen. I'm sure its nothing compared to some scavengers on here but heres my purchase history for the past couple months.

Gamecube with controller, memory card, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0 and Metroid Prime-$30
Original Xbox with one controller-$15
Halo 2-$4
Fable-$8
Sega Sports DC with 3 controllers, 2 vmu, 1 jump pack and Sega Smash Pack Vol 1-$49
Rainbow Six Vegas 2-$5 (seventh gen not quite retro but Gamestop has a plethora of great old PS3 titles for $5 now)
TH American Wasteland and Max Payne 2-$7

Thats 3 new consoles, numerous controllers and accessories and 9 games (one of which includes 12 games) for just over a quarter of what a new console costs. Or to put it another way, less than the cost of 2 new PS4 games. Hell, even 2 new PS3 games.

Yes prices have gone up in certain places where people think they have more than they do but I still think this is overshadowed by people with old stuff that don't know its value.

Also a year ago I was looking for FF7 for PS1 and on craigslist found someone selling a PS1 still in the original box with FF7, FF9 and FF Tactis, all black label, all mint condition-$30

I also was in a pawn shop 2 years ago and found Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark and Shadow Of The Empire all complete in box, manuals and everything (which I'd never seen for 64 games) for $5 each. Of course I bought them all.

So even if prices have gone up in certain places (mostly retail) the retro scene is still a great, amazingly affordable alternative (or supplement) to the current generation gaming and is the reason I'm not jumping to spend $450 to essentially be able to play one game.

Welcome to DC-Talk! Since you are a retro game collector and player, we'd always recommend a Dreamcast for your gaming needs. I too think game consoles these days are a fortune, by the way.

Some of those deals you got were absolute steals (FF7 or FF9 would easily get $30 each), and that Sega Sports DC looks incredible (I know, I've had one for years).

As I said in an earlier post, I'd start stocking up on 6th gen games, since they're starting to go for more, and the 7th gen is about to crash (you can already tell Gamestop's scooching the Wii games out).

I just got a Wii. I want to get some Sega titles for it (and for GC). Any recommendations? (other than Sonic Heroes which is automatic)

Skies of Arcadia? Phantasy Star Online? Crazy Taxi? Sonic Adventure 1/2? The Wii Sonic games mostly got mixed reviews. You could also get the sequel to the Saturn's Nights Into Dreams, which was a Wii exclusive.

sega games on the wii i would recomend are sakura wars for the wii, house of the dead any of them, and ghost squad

I know it especially felt like a steal when I had just purcahsed FF7 for $40 on ebay just 2 weeks ago but had to return it because it kept freezing. I was just looking on craigslist for a replacement when I hit that jackpot and went over to scoop it an hour later. I didn't even know it had the original box til I got there which was a nice bonus. It was covered in USPS postage tape with the date "october/1997" on it I've never even plugged it in since I have my b/c PS3. the guy was moving from Phoenix to Denver literally the next day and just wanted to get rid of it.

This is what worries me about things going digital. You're never going to find someone selling off their digital collection because they're moving the next day. You could say the flip side is you'd never have to sell your collection if you're moving but still... it's no longer a buyer's market.

Also to reinforce my point, after I picked up BK CIB for $5 I sold the extra cartridge I originally bought for $15 on ebay for $25 so yeah, prices are alot about where you look.

Also I actually bought my 64 in 2009 and started retro collecting then. so I was way off saying 2013 before. So I've been retro collecting for a minute now. Went back and fixed that to give a more accurate time table of console values.
