I've tried to make things working for a while now. The old PC with its internal modem has a broken power supply now.

Will this modem work if I get the driver for it on my newer PC with no internal modem?

I don't want this to turn into a "does this modem work" thread. There aren't really any specifics to know about which modems work and which don't other than what I specified in the guide. If you need help setting it up then that is another thing which I have problem helping you with

Do I need a line voltage inducer even if I use a revision A Dreamcast modem of the 56k models?

Do I need to hook my PC up to my modem with an ethernet cable, since this is supposed to be a bridged connection?

You can use wired or wireless connection on the host computer, but a wired connection is preferred because it will have a lower latency.

The Internet to this computer s provided through a modem that has a built in router (the one I mistakingly pictured above). Ubuntu still doesn't seem to connect to the Internet even though it works outside VMware. I checked all the settings carefully.

PS! I have the exact same modem plugged into my PC as the one you pictured as an example in the tutorial on page 1.

Ok, so this is what the Ubuntu terminal tells me while I'm trying to connect the Dreamcast to the Internet (my modem is also making a noise when I do this):

11/04 18:27:35 yS1 locking the line
11/04 18:27:36 yS1 lowering DTR to reset Modem
11/04 18:27:37 yS1 send: AT[0d]
11/04 18:27:37 yS1 waiting...
11/04 18:27:37 yS1 wfr: waiting for ``RING''
11/04 18:27:37 yS1 cannot set controlling tty (ioctl): Operation not permitted
11/04 18:27:37 yS1 >>> this might be caused because you have run mgetty/vgetty
11/04 18:27:37 yS1 >>> from the command line. Don't do that, use /etc/inittab!
11/04 18:27:37 yS1 send: ATA[0d]
11/04 18:27:37 yS1 waiting for ``CONNECT''
11/04 18:28:31 yS1 found action string: ``NO CARRIER''
11/04 18:28:31 ##### failed A_FAIL dev=ttyS1, pid=4723, caller='none', conn='', name=''

I can see it tells me about a problem, can anybody tell me in English what I need to do or type in to make it connect?

For the line voltage will 9V 300MA be sufficient?

Yeah I think 300mA should be more than enough.
