Thanks for the help! I am now online on PSO using the Win 98 PC-DC server. Had an old Win 98 PC with a V92 modem and I built the line simulator today. Everything works great and I did it for less than $10! Woot.

I think my problem lies in setting the proxy IP and the Dreamcast's IP in the "options.(INTERFACE)" file (we create in /etc/ppp). I have no clue where I'm supposed to define what's going to be the proxy IP and Dreamcast IP, or if I'm just supposed to pick a random one as long as it's an unused IP elsewhere (In my case it's 10.0.0.*). both broadband modem and router, providing Internet, are one.

What I randomly set, since my router is "10.0.0.138", was "10.0.0.140" as proxy (at random) and "10.0.0.141" for my Dreamcast (also at random). both have been pinged and both are unused. Something tells me this is wrong, and that these IPs should be defined somewhere else. My DNS is completely different from my router's IP, just to let you know. I put that one in (since it's appearantly my "primary DNS" according to "connection information" in Ubuntu) in the "options" file beside "ms-dns".

"NO CARRIER" message keeps on stepping up in the connection process. Have been through the whole tutorial one godzillion times now, with the same error. Double checked every line in every file (wether commented in or out at right times). I have made completely sure I'm using a Conexant produced USB modem, that also has Linux drivers on the disc that have been installed in Ubuntu. It has been detected successfully every time. just wanna make sure that I'm not seen as the complete noob I was back in my early days on this site, therefore getting wrong kind of help on this. And yes, Ubuntu does have a wired internet connection going, now. I have posted a picture, as well as the full name of how my USB modem appears in "Device manager", in the "modem compability" forum linked to this one, very recently. Feel free to have a look at that one.

I believe this is the last hurdle I have on this far to long journey of mine 8so to speak), on my way to get the DC-PC server up 'n' goin'. If somebody could please explain if I'm doing this right or not, and perhaps eve tutor that would be appreciated. I'm so joining your PSO community after this.

This is the messages I get when trying to connect the PC modem. In this case I didn't connect it to anything. But it should be able to give me better clearance than
"NO CARRIER" even so. Gives me the same thing while dialing with the Dreamcast connected, anyway.

I think the problem lies in the last message, which shows up at the beginning as well.

Been trying this for days and getting the same result. I checked and rechecked every config file mentioned and all seems well. This is my log output:
I noticed the the line I have padded out above does not appear on the guide's log.
My modem is a Conexant D850, and the DC modem is a model A. Any help would be appreciated.

Your log looks ok. If you're sure your config files are all correct then you could just have your timing off syncing up the connection. You want to do the "killall" command about 2.5-3 seconds after Dreamcast has started dialing. I recommend testing with a web browser before anything else.

I just added something to this guide. So in the past I have sometimes had trouble getting bridged connection to connect properly in VMware, which is what you need for this guide. But until now I didn't know the reason for this. Basically VMware automatically selects the NIC to bridge to and it doesn't always work correctly so you wan't to specify manually which one to use using the virtual network editor.

I tried making another dc-pc for my new x64 laptop in linux.
The modem is now installed, but somehow the modem just doesn't answer to the dc calls...
Judging from the logs it seems very different to what is sent (ttySHSF0.log) in my other laptop. My guess is new ppp and mgetty version use a different config, hence why it won't work okay.

And wvdialconfif sets the modem init commands a bit weird... What should be the ones to use?

Anyone made the dc-pc on linux using the latest ubuntu version 12.10 ?

And if I don't want to instalar VMware?
At the moment I have 2 OS on my pc.
Windows 7 and Unbuntu.

Can I just start following this on my unbuntu os or the VMware configuration is essential ?

You don't need to use a virtual machine if your PC is configured to dual boot. The VM is just for people who will only be using Linux for this particular purpose and thus don't want to have it installed on a dedicated partition.

Well, you don't need a VM as long as the modem itself actually works under Linux. If it is a winmodem that isn't natively supported on Linux, then you'll actually need to use a VM (so that Linux just sees a normal serial port and Windows actually does the heavy lifting of dealing with the modem).
