Note that this will be erased when you power off or restart the Pi so you'll have to enter it again.

I had that problem until I added the Dreamcast's IP to my routers DMZ

"Port Forwarding/DMZ Instructions

Some games may require port forwarding or DMZ in order to play a game once connected. To set up DMZ on your router, go to your router's configuration page, find the DMZ setting, and input the IP address of your Dreamcast.

To find the IP address of your Dreamcast using DreamPi, plug the Pi into a TV or monitor (before turning it on), look for the IP address as the text scrolls up (e.g. "My IP address is XXX.XXX.X.XXX"), and replace the digits after the last period with 98 (e.g. If the IP of the Pi is 192.168.1.107 then the Dreamcast should be 192.168.1.98)."

:D

I got a brand new card to put 1.5 on and it seems to work going through the router now!!

I created a game with bots and for the first time was able to play without an error message box on the screen followed promptly by a disco...

hopefully it will play nice syncing with actual humans now too!

Well I really can't see anything strange on the server side, all I can say it is probably
something on the client side blocking packets. Of course I will keep my eye on it, but
I can't really debug the client side.

Awesome, so you mean that a new card fixed your issues?

seems like it..
I flashed a new card after the post I made about hooking direct to the modem and it worked through the router.. later in the evening I was able to play with human players with no problems..
I have not even bothered to try direct to modem again..

Hmm I tried to get online and I keep getting a no dial tone message, I don't have dmz on my router so I tried ip forward. I think it's the same but no cigar. I will try and reflash my card with the updated 1.5

This is amazing. Thanks to all involved. Played online yesterday and bought a DC Mic from my local dealer today :)

Issue summary:

1. Issue: If you get re-establish communication issue while joining or creating a game
Solution: Check that you are port-forwarding UDP port 7980 or set the Dreamcat IP as DMZ

2. Issue: Lost connection to the server
Solution: I have restarted the AFO server in verbose mode now, so hopefully I can see something but
due to the fact that a lot of people are playing without any issues this looks like a client
issue.

3. Issue: Can't even see the game list
Solution: Probably something with NAT:ing the hardcoded IP to the private server, need more input
regarding how the IPTables is looking.

So because I have enabled verbose logging, give me a PM with the time you tried joining if you have issue 2 and 3 and I will check if I can spot something.
