Re: Metropolis Street Racer (MSR) Review
The lack of a replay function in MSR really did piss me off at the time. Though I remember it being said that it was originally incorporated into the US game before being left out at the last minute before release. There are rumours it was left in the review copies given out to the Press. Is that true ? Does that mean the white label US version has replay function intact ?

Neohound:
Bizarre Creations were unable to get the replay function to work without crashing, hence its removal. The US instruction manual has pictures of the post-race screen with the option 'View Replay' but they were probably printed using a pre-release version. I think the majority of review copies were tightly controlled and were probably bought to magazines by Sega staff in person or reviewed in Sega's HQ, otherwise we would have seen a leak of some sorts.
A former member of Bizarre Creations has a GD-ROM of the unreleased Japanese version but nothing was mentioned about a replay option being present.

Re: Metropolis Street Racer (MSR) Review
Thanks for that rjay. I was just about to search for a US white label........so you've saved me a bit of cash lol
Since you mentioned the unreleased Japanese version, I was wondering if there were any extras or differences that you know of compared to the western released versions ?

Re: Metropolis Street Racer (MSR) Review
The kudo system (or maybe my driving) is so weird in this game. I understand the concept, skidding = kudos, but it never seems so regular. In the early chapters, it was all I could do to get 150 or even 200 points skidding wildly around the track. Now on much later chapters, I'm not even trying to skid, don't skid that much, and wind up with highly inflated scores like 800 points. I never really know how well pointswise I've done until the points get tallied. Kinda weird
The game has gotten a lot more enjoyable now that I've unlocked larger tracks and faster cars though.

Sorry I forgot to answer your question
.
Unfortunately I have no idea if there are differences (apart from the language) in the proposed Japanese version but if I had to guess, I would say no. If there were any significant differences, the copy would probably have been leaked; it wouldn't be worth incurring the wrath of Sega's lawyer's otherwise.
BTW, here's a promo for the proposed Japanese version. Please note, this is an early build where vehicles could leave the ground and Honda car's were selectable.

Re: Metropolis Street Racer (MSR) Review
After shelving this game for about 6 years, I've picked it up again. First time playing it with a wheel, in VGA, using an everything-unlocked VMU save.. No surprise that it's much better than I remembered! One feature that really stands out is the option of using a fisheye lens camera.. makes everything look crazy epic, especially during turns.
The unreleased version looks better, however, for one reason that i can see: you could drive on the sidewalks, rather than getting bumped by those titanium fences.

I've seen some rumors from cheat code sites that you can drive a Porsche 911 in this game if you "complete quest mode 2 times"
Fact or fiction?

Complete fiction. That false code appeared after the game's release and has never gone away !

Re: Metropolis Street Racer (MSR) Review
I recently bought some copies of Official Dreamcast Magazine UK (ODM) and discovered some pictures of MSR's Dreamarena pages and a leaderboard. While you can see the remains of this site at http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://met ... -key.com/*, I thought they'd be cool to scan so you can see how the page looked when it was live. The leaderboards have gone forever and the picture I have seems to have been taken before it became flooded with Action Replay/VMU hacks.

And while I'm posting, here's the guy who won an Opel Speedster in a French MSR Competition. I'm not jealous...honesty not
