Yes, this is normal. When the DreamConn+ was developed in 2018, the VM2 (and its features) was not even an idea back then. The DreamConn+ was developed based on what was the only option around: that is the VMU.

Now, my new DreamConn S does support the VM2 (and many other new features) and also it supports the automatic detection - but ONLY via openMenu (ProductID).

The GameID cannot be wirelessly supported due to the nature of how it works.

that sucks, i've put quite a bit of work into my dreamconn+ from switching out the shell, replacing the battery and even a usb-c mod, it's a shame the game-id feature doesn't work on it but it's understandable but it now gives me less of a reason to use it which is a shame.
would it be at all possible to just buy the pcb and the new vmu faceplate that's a better fit for the vm2 screen, so i can simply upgrade my old dreamconn+ rather than buy a whole new controller?
the mod itself would be very easy for me to do.

I understand, but this is how it works with fresh ideas and new hardware + features are developed.
Otherwise, I would have to not release either the VM2, or the DreamConn S :)

I'm afraid it's not possible as the new PCB is not compatible with the OEM shell.

That's why the DreamConn S is not just an internal mod; it also comes with a brand-new shell as well, in order to accommodate the new PCB and upgrades (USB-C charging, new analog stick, cross button, color options).

Derek(ateam) has made a nice review on it and comparison to the DreamConn+ : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwqgNkfL5Xw

yeah he's a good friend, i've seen that video, just rewatched it actually, it didn't show any internal images so i was not aware it wasn't compatible with the oem shell.
could you share some images that would better explain how it's not thanks

Derek is an excellent guy and a very good friend to me!

Sure, I could send some pictures when I get the chance.

Meanwhile, here's a little something to describe it : the new PCB is extended compared to the old PCB and carries the USB-C connector. It's designed so it fits right to the new design of the front shell. So, it simply won't fit to the old OEM front shell. The back shell is also a new design.

So, the new PCB won't fit on the OEM shell by any means. If you take a close look and compare them on the video, you'll notice.

Made a !bleem.VMU in the root no folder, I just tried it retail bleem!cast it only error fail for format tried in Gran Turismo 2 v1.2 and Metal Gear Integral

I thought I could copy from existing but BIOS doesn't let clone, if it doesn't list files it won't

EDIT: Also the "!" I thought would put on the top but was all the way bottom I have to scroll past all the folders to select, inconvenience

ooo nice! Still some use out of Speud disc! Use save+load dump now have my old bleems on VM2! So a newcomer to bleem as of now will need to seek two original VMUs before

A more simple solution would be to host the file for everybody. A virtual VM of the Bleem formatted VM image.
