Can anyone link me to a video of SoA using bloom? I've heard on here that it uses it during 2 cut scenes but I never beat the game and would love to see it :)

Oh and in regards to Under Defeat I think it destroys every other shmup on the Dreamcast and other systems from a technical perspective. I don't particularly dig the art style but even stuff like trees being blown by explosions and little details like that show the insane attention to detail present in that game

EDIT: here @ 7:52 the bloom starts. Its only used when they are shown floating.Hard to see due to video quality and that blue texture/filter applied over the scene. Its looks much when actually played.

well for the bloom simply look for the scene before fiona awakes, her dream of the silver shrine is bloomed. Then when the crew is taken to that archive of history on the moon that they are just floating, its bloomed. Its pretty low quality ,not really up to snuff from the kind of bloom u see on the ps2.(I hear the dreamcast just isnt built right for those kinda effects)

Under defeat is pretty but I wonder if its tech or just really good artistic touches.

So cool! thanks for the video and I got a good laugh out of SoA playthrough part 156 :D . Well, I personally think its a combination of the two regarding Under Defeat. They paid a lot of attention to detail in making the game but because of those fine tunings the game probably requires a bit more horsepower and tech. I remember my first time playing Crysis I had the sound off and was walking through some forest and all the rain started flying sideways and in weird directions. I thought it was a glitch but then I looked up and saw a helicopter and realized it was affecting the way the rain fell! It was probably the coolest video gaming moment ever because it was such a little touch that made the experience so much more real than anything I had ever played before. Under Defeat reminds me of that in its intense attention to detail but overall I don't care for the greyish art style.

You know, I really can't bring myself to play SoA anymore which is a real shame because I love it. I brought a broken copy so I decided to download a backup (since I believe that makes it legal :D ) but between the no VGA (S-video hurts my eyes because of the sharpness and my TV won't let me adjust!) the loud disc noise and the horrible lag in starting battles it just kills the experience for me. It works fine when the game moves at a steady pace and I really love the story but right now for example, I just finished Asia land or whatever the fuck they call it and they told me to fly northwest. I missed wherever I was supposed to go so I ended up flying till I dead ended and with all the random battles it took me almost an hour. I was so pissed I haven't picked it up since but I have LOTS of trouble following the directions in that game and sometimes they just seem dead wrong :(

didn't Voot push the DC quite a way? the frames and polygons not to mention the rate of animation or speed, whatever you call it, that was a light speed game with no slowdown that I can recall

It was a beautiful game but I think it relied heavily on textures. I actually own the Saturn version and they don't look all that different, that's the only reason I don't find it too impressive :D . The gameplay is unreal though, so deep.

I think you give virtual on too little credit. It was a model 3 game and a perfect conversion. But thats why i was wondering was under defeat was a tech achievement or just artistic touches. For example trigger heart exeilica pushes a very high polygon count( higher than under defeat Id dare say,44000 triangles per frame = 2.6 million polygons per second, confirmed by a emu author to boot .) but doesnt look it.So only because virtual on may not look it doesnt mean its not pushing the machine hard.

Nope, I don't know for sure but if you have an emulator please check for us. I just feel that it isn't pushing the machine too hard just from seeing the Saturn version produce very similar visuals but you're right, I have no clue. And to be fair, I think Triggerheart looks it, that game has crazy depth to each scene :D

Well I cant check as I dont really play on an emulator and I no longer have the frame ripping tools. But comparing the orginal virtual on the saturn to the one on the dreamcast is too much isnt it? It was a model 3 game which alot of people think it was more or less on par with the dreamcast( dont know how true that is though).

VO:OT on the Dreamcast isnt a direct port of the Model 3-version, but a port of the NAOMI version (which is based on the model 3 version ;-). I do agree that this game looks very good on the Dreamcast, especially very colorful!
