Dots on game disc's

A few days ago i discovered the word "disc rot".
Is that really a thing i thought, but after looking on a few game disc's i recently got, i got worried that its true.
Is there data loss on this disc?
I think i can put the disc in my dvd-burner and do a backup of the game, and see if there is any problem with it.

Unfortunately that is disc rot. I have some Saturn games that have it as well. Once it starts theres no way to stop it. More than likely their is some data loss. Whatever data was there is gone if you can see light through it. It still looks minor at this point so it may not be enough for it to not run or crash. But its hard to say, I would just download a iso. A lot of those games were ripped years ago when the disc’s were in better shape.

Thats just sad...
I just got Speed devils online and Wetrix+ today and both have dots, but just one tiny one on Wetrix+
Still the cd's are in near mint condition.
Suddenly i reggret buying so many cd games.
I have Grandia 2 and Headhunter coming in a few days.
I won't check those for "rot"
Is this whats gonna happen to all cd's?
I have 94 Dreamcast games so far, but now i dont feel like continue to collect anymore.
Do i dare to check my Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue 1 and 2 games for rot.

Just be happy to have the game cds.
In the future it will become even more difficult to find tangible media at all.
The game disks will degrade, the console cd laser lenses will stop working..
Everything will be emulated and digital.
If you collect dc stuff maybe have one dreamcast for gd-rom, and another with a gdemu.

Sadly this is exactly why I decided to just bite the bullet and go the GDEMU route. I'd rather have and play the real thing, but when so many of the discs I get just won't boot even tho my DC laser is fine, or they're just scrathed to hell, and increasingly expensive to top it all off, it's just not really worth buying the games anymore.

Thank you for being so positive SMiTH. I am Happy to finally have a copy of Speed Devils Online.

(i will try to forget the dots)
I still have to go for a full 215 European set.
Some day i will get there, even if its only with "cheddar cheese" disc's.
I will probably rebuild a console with GDEMU now that i know of "disc rot"
Is there something i have to know before i buy a GDEMU? Tarnish
