Well, Everything deteriorates over time. Even Playskool toys :D . Now the issue with using CD's on the Dreamcast is that it makes the laser work harder. It won't destroy it per say but it will give the Dreamcast's laser more to work with. For a example: If a Dreamcast's laser could last for lets say, one million hours reading only Dreamcast GD Roms and the Dreamcast laser had to work 50 percent more to read a CD-R then it would last about 3/4 of a million hours. So there is your answer.

I think the myth about non-dummied isos is all complete bullshit. Although a dummied game can increase load times significantly.
i can't say for sure why CD-R's mess up the laser faster but i believe that they do and for a few reasons. first is that i hear this myth a lot and it is not limited to the Dreamcast. i hear this about PS2 lasers as well, but for them its with burned DVD movies. i would gladly excuse all the hype as nothing but bullshit, but when i lent my brother a Dreamcast with nothing but backups to play. the laser started acting up in a matter of months. he didn't play it every day or for very long each day either. that Dreamcast was in good working order when i lent it to him. it was a spare one that sat in my closet. so i have to credit the the laser issues to him using CD-Rs.

i know he used a few older echelon ISOs more than anything else. so perhaps it was the poor sort orders? or maybe they are not dummied? i cant say why for sure, all i can say is that CD-Rs seem to be harder on the lasers.

Ive been using a mixture of GD's DCres releases, emulators, and Echelon/kalisto releases (but not much of the last one)

... And I have not had any performance issues thus far. I bought the DC used in March

is this limited to the GD-roms ability to read a game at all? i say this because the echelon releases he had would load extremely slow. they loaded slow on all of my Dreamcast. i would have to skip the intro to NHL 2k2 and NBA 2k2.

i sent him a different Dreamcat and a few real GD-roms. i have the other DC back here with me. it will stop playing games in the middle of the game. like in NBA 2k2 it will just quit and go to the vmu screen. i have not had time to test it with any GD-rom games yet. so who knows maybe it will play official games fine?

No they all perform well. However I have not used Echelon releases in forever. Kalisto releases and DCRES releases work very well. I bought a backup DC at a goodwill for
$3.50 jusssst in case though ;)

that is a great question. i can't say for sure either, but i have heard that the burned image is not as easy to read as a pressed one? so it may make the laser work harder? you say the games are like originals? why would NBA and NHL 2k2 not load the intro movies right? all of the intro screens load like shit. you have to try to skip them as if they were PS1 FMVs on bleem. my official copies work fine on the same Dreamcast.
