Can physical travel ever be replaced by technology?

Post by cat33 »

Can physical travel ever be replaced by technology such as Full Dive Virtual Reality or Mind Uploading? Or in other words will technology completely make travel obsolete? When I say travel I mean flying to another country for holidays or to visit family or friends.

I am not talking about business travel as I know that Zoom and a whole bunch of videoconferencing platforms will partially if not completely replace business travel.

When that becomes reality, I just hope they'll use this song to advertise it:
https://youtu.be/wytp_VoMOeE
With lyrics like these, it would be a perfect fit:

Becoming slaves to the latest craze
Before we've seen it, we're sure we need it
And mail's replacing conversation
Human contact's been in danger
(But look how far we've come)

Falling further back with the latest breakthroughs
Sterilized the way we're communicating
Anonymity to accomplish on PC
What we now can't do for real
Point, click, order now
No need to leave the house
Technology's providing the freedom for us all
To be tethered to the wall

We've started living through posted pictures
And gaining meaning through others feedback
The kids are learning, preparing early,
From what they see, for a life behind machines
(Life behind machines)

Falling further back with the latest breakthroughs
Sterilized the way we're communicating
Anonymity to accomplish on PC
What we now can't do for real
Point, click, order now
No need to leave the house
Technology's providing the freedom for us all
To be tethered to the wall

Even when we're out with friends
There're whole groups with lowered heads
They're hypnotized in fluorescent glow
We're out together, but we're still alone
The past few years we've come so far
Wonder where we'll be in ten or twenty more...

Falling further back with the latest breakthroughs
Sterilized the way we're communicating
Anonymity to accomplish on PC
What we now can't do for real
Point, click, order now
No need to leave the house
Technology's providing the freedom for us all
To be tethered to the wall

Transhumanism is an idea that the technocracy has wanted to implement for decades. More than likely the outcome will be a repeat of the luddites. One can only hope that this is the case. I'm already tired of every technical convenience being equal to zero privacy and full adoption by the masses. We should strive to keep interpersonal communication the way it should be, face to face irl. The moment we stop being social beings is the moment we cease to exist. And don't tell me to download the damn app so i can do business with you lol.

@SMiTH could of never said it better myself, you hit the nail on the head.
Now I wish that the VR headset SEGA prototype was technically advanced. If only there was a separate timeline. A Hail our SEGA overlords!
