How to use 'TRACK04' widescreen fix?

Hi, just joined the forum and trying to understand a few things, if you guys could help me with the following.
I see some games have a widescreen zip file and inside there's a Track04 file.
With the current development release, I can see the option of 'Game aspect ratio = 16:9 or stretched' but even that 16:9 seems to have the same image that you get on the 4:3 aspect ratio and the emulator stretches it to fit the width of the screen.
Does that Track04 file allows you to display the sides of the 4:3 image? so you'd have the black vertical lines you had in 4:3 populated with new graphics (rather than just stretching the width of the original image)
And if that's what Track04 was doing, how should I use it? I just overwrote the original file but it doesn't seem to do anything, ie, whether I use that patch or not... the 'aspect ratio 16:9' always behaves the same...
