Cleanest IDE install while keeping original drive?

Post by bobrocks95 »

I mostly use original discs and own a lot of them, but I'd like the option to boot translations and hacks without relying on compressed .CDI images (or for Atomiswave ports, non-working .CDI images).

Since GDEmu and the Terraonion MODE both replace the GD-ROM drive, are there any easy to install options to get an IDE drive (or IDE+SATA+whatever else adapter) installed without cutting giant holes in my console shell or removing my GD-ROM drive?

The Dreamcast GD-IDE board from DragonCity and the Dream IDE Reborn from gametracks both look nice and easy to install, one goes on the GD-ROM drive and the other goes on the system motherboard. Maybe the GD-IDE can be no-cut by shoving the IDE cable out the back of the shell and I could 3D print a little case for the CompactFlash adapter?

Don't know if that requires bending metal inside or anything to make clearance.

EDIT: Unfortunately my GD-ROM drive is incompatible with the GD-IDE board :|

I did find one actually SUPER clean install from a Spanish Youtuber, though I'd prefer to not have to solder all those individual wires:

EDIT2: I have seen this done on a VA0 GD-ROM drive by ModzvilleUSA- I hope he made the QSB he said he was working on for it! I could pull the wires off but probably not without ripping some hair off my head in the process
