Rent a Hero No. 1, unable to transform into hero

Hi this is my first post here but I didn't know where else to turn given that my extensive google searches have turned up nothing on this topic.
Essentially my issue is that I am unable to transform into my hero suit (using X button), this has been a persistent issue since the middle of the first job. I have tried to remedy the issue through burning a new copy, which proved unsuccessful. I still press X and nothing happens. I believe that my controller is fully working so I doubt that that is the issue. All I know is that I am unable to properly play this game which saddens me as I was enjoying the little bit I was able to play.
Has anyone else run into this issue? Am I maybe using the wrong button to transform (single click of X). Thank you
I am playing the english patched cdi found on CDRomance, I was originally playing the widescreen patch but switched over to the stock one to see if that would help.
