I've got a Pi 4B already set up running Home Bridge primarily and Octoprint as a service that runs parallel doing its own thing.
I'd like to keep using that same Pi but just tack on the DreamPi service instead of needing to swap/overwrite the setup I already have for the DreamPi image.
Is there any way I can run DreamPi as a side service like I’ve got Octoprint?

I would love that too! I have my pi running 24/7 as a pi-hole and if I want to connect my DC to the internet, I not only have to deal with all the cables, but leave the rest of the house without DNS connectivity.

Flashing an image is super simple, but linux people will always do things their own way...
I attempted to assemble my own dreampi setup on another device. Raspberry Pi is easy to acquire again, so the project has been abandoned.
Main takeaway is to setup multiarch if yours is different than the Pi script. Install supporting packages and the dreampi package, and make sure you have Python3.

Someone else was trying to make it a module for the RetroNAS environment if you want to investigate.

Re: DreamPi as a service without flashing the image
It's definitely possible with a bit of linux skills. I have my own implementation of dreampi that runs on a local VM that listens for my BBA to join the network, then tunnels DNS queries to it so I can have my dreamcast now status update automatically without manual intervention. Runs a custom service that interacts with the dreampi scripts.
That being said, octoprint can be relatively demanding in its own right, and is generally within close proximity to your 3D printer, so im not sure how practical it would be to run both services in parallel. But sure its possible.

Tbh the hardest part of this wasn’t the fact I’d need to splice up a telephone cable and solder a 9v battery to it, but the hemming and hawing of “blehhhh I actually need to scale up and buy things to match my needs? And I gotta order the things outside of Amazon? But I wanna do my impulsive project nowwwwww!

THIS! I see a perpetual chorus of whiners acting like Dreampi is a consumer product, and it should be as free as the wifi they pull from the air. "The dreamcastlive shop is sold-out" they say. The information is out there, and the parts list is flexible to make it more accessible. It takes a bit of time and effort to collect the Power Gems.... err... components. It's not like the setup isn't vulnerable to other networking issues, too.Majestano wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 4:12 pm Tbh the hardest part of this wasn’t the fact I’d need to splice up a telephone cable and solder a 9v battery to it, but the hemming and hawing of “blehhhh I actually need to scale up and buy things to match my needs? Anyways, I'm one to talk I have been putting off... Treamcast repair, 2x Kite's Circuit Gem assembly, 3x USB4MAPLE assembly, and other hardware projects.

It’s less “kids these days” and more my hypocrisy going “weh less than $100 in parts for a nifty doodad” flanked by “oooo $75 furry art! Sure no problem! Onto the stack of other art it goes!” XPOatBob wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 8:31 pm

Tho getting the right USB modem is still a pain in the buns for how obscure they are, especially since you only have like 3-5 old working choices versus being able to grab any one off Amazon or AliExpress

Re: DreamPi as a service without flashing the image
"Just buy another one" isn't an option for all the people. A dream pi as an executable linux program instead of a full image will be nice, but I'm not sure how impossible actually is in code.
