Just a quick question for people with in depth knowledge of the DC’s capabilities or potential:

Could the Dreamcast manage a port of Out Run 2 and do the game justice?

Quick answer yes. Just play the PSP version and find out how it would have looked like. It even runs 30 fps.

This was answered many years ago on the DCEmulation forum by a Sumo Digital dev, definitely worth a read if you're interested in the topic:

The short answer - cramming OutRun 2 onto the PSP was a herculean task, and porting it to the Dreamcast would have been an even tougher job still. Some major work would have been needed to port the game within the system's limitations, assuming it would have even been possible without noticeable cutbacks.

I guess the question that this makes us ask is if OutRun 2 would have signalled a follow-up console from Sega in 2004/2005, had the Dreamcast been a success and allowed Sega to remain in the console business.

Thanks for that link and info Optimus - will digest later.

I would like to think Sega would have gone for a DC port if the DC would have made it to 2003+. I guess it would have been similar to the PS2 port? Not a bad thing really?

There are a lot of speculative elements at play. It's important to remember that OutRun 2 was built for the Chihiro hardware, which was based upon the original Xbox - had the Dreamcast still been alive in 2002/2003, there's a chance that OutRun 2 would have been designed for NAOMI instead, or even something else entirely like Hikaru or NAOMI 2. So many different ways it could have gone!

If anything, I think F355 Challenge is a good indicator that the Dreamcast/NAOMI could have been up to the task with the right development team, granted F355 Challenge tends to have a lot less going on onscreen than OutRun 2.

If Outrun 2 came out on the Dreamcast, it would be close to the PSP version.

Dreamcast couldn't handle anything close to a decent PS2-level GTA3. And now we have a port with PC-version geometry. Blah blah blah the Dreamcast can't do this, the Dreamcast can't do that...
