PSO Help With Getting Online

I just set up my DreamPi recently to get my Dreamcast online! And as such, this whole process is very new to me.

I tried playing Phantasy Star Online Ver. 2 and going online, and while it did successfully dial into the internet and connect, once it got past the message “Welcome to the world of PSO” (or something similar), the loading screen completely froze (no loading animation, no sound). Maybe a full minute or two later, it unfroze, and I appeared in the online lobby with a “connection error” message, after which I was booted back to the title screen.

I’m sure this issue is probably due to my own inexperience and ignorance with all this, but would anyone happen to know what’s causing this issue, and be willing to walk a newbie like me through what I need to do to get connected?

Thank you in advance!

The game freezes or gives an error when trying to connect.
The North American version of Phantasy Star Online v2 requires the Sylverant PSO Patcher to connect. You can download the patcher from the Downloads page.

I get instantly disconnected when joining a lobby or game with other players.
You may need to change the MTU (Maximum Transmission Size) on your router. This setting is usually found in the “Setup” or “WAN Setup” section of your router’s configuration page. 1400 is the recommended size for PSO

It might also be worth checking if you can actually connect to anything? ie can you use a web browser

Ooh great to know about the patcher! I’ll download that and give that a try when I get home from work. If it still doesn’t work, I’ll check out the MTU thing too.

I can definitely connect to things - the web browser works, and I’ve even downloaded and used DLC packs for Sonic Adventure and such.

Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction, and so quickly too! I’ll be sure to be back with any updates!

So, getting online, I went to the website through the PSO title screen and found the "Sylverant" button on the home page. But when I click it, an error message pops up that says, "Host could not be found. There is a problem with the network or the URL is incorrect."

Everything else works, all the other buttons on the home page load their respective connected pages correctly. Do I need to do anything to fix this, or am I in the wrong place?

Do you still have a disc drive in your DC or do you have a GDEMU/MODE? That might change how you approach this. If you’re using a GDEMU/MODE the Ives pre-patched CDI is probably the easiest method, if you’re still using GD-ROMs then the patcher disc is probably easiest.
