I think that Shenmue III should be made for Dreamcast and sold as a downloadable file (to be burned to CD-R) for a number of reasons.

:1: Cheaper production cost,

:2: it's such a niche title only the 50 thousand or so remaining Dreamcast owners are going to pay for this game but if you charge 20 or 30 dollars for the download file SEGA still makes 1 - 1.5 million dollars so even though that's not a whole lot of cash for them it might still be a profit from the cheap production cost

:3: All us Shenmue fanboys would get to play it the way it was meant to be played

:4: Maybe SEGA would then release all three parts on PSN, XBLA, and WiiWare to increase profit

:5: Little to no distribution cost because SEGA would not need to print/write GD-Roms, pay for packaging, or pay for shipping.

1, 2 and 3) dreaming is free

SEGA announced a while back that they wanna do the game, and they said that if sony, microsoft or nintendo put the 50% of the total cost of the project, it will be an exclusive to that company... let's just pray that sony of microsoft pay for it...

I would hope that Microsoft payed for it, since...

#1. The 360 controller is closest to the Dreamcast.

#2. Shenmue 2 is on xbox already.

#3. Microsoft can afford to throw down money.

I want a Shenmue 3 on the system it was meant for too, but its never gonna happen.

No but it's fun to think about.

I'll only be satisfied if Shenmue III came out on a brand new Sega console. Anything else would be a betrayal.

On a side note regarding the first post talking about how sega would distribute this:

first of all as everyone said it wont happen
factually tho their is no way for them to do it as if you remember towards the end of the DC's life they took out mil-cd functionality thus the people who own these DC's wouldnt be able to play it

on the other hand if sega wanted to put it on GD that wouldnt be possible now anyhow as they dont have any hkt-01's anymore

chaseincats, what they are trying to say is...

1. Shenmue III should come out on a new Sega console, not a Dreamcast. Other words, it can be on a DVD or DLC, not a GD-ROM.

2. regarding a new home console, you could easily have the "DVD drive" to read a GD-ROM "if" Sega was to come out with a REAL home console (not happening). If we see a Sega "home console" (stretching the definition), it will be a DLC type, thus it's download or no game. I hope the DLC drive space is large enough, that would be Sega's biggest challenge, how big to make the DLC folder.

3. I'd love to see a Shenmue III!

well, the first game conference since sega put out this statement (GDC) started yesterday so maybe we will hear something there (probably not tho )
