Most Console Gamers Still Prefer Physical Media

Despite the advent of online game stores on all three major consoles, most console gamers apparently still prefer hoarding collections of gaming discs to downloading games. A recent survey conducted by Ipsos in the UK revealed that 64 per cent of the 1,000 users polled would rather have games on physical discs, while only 25 per cent would prefer digital copies. In the survey, 55 per cent of those polled said price was the key factor in determining their interest in downloading games, while 27 per cent said they wanted games available online before they were in the shops. Ipsos' director Ian Bramley explained, 'Interest absolutely drops away when you get to the types of pricing that you might charge for a new physical disc. People's perceptions are that they're not prepared to pay as much for digital content — they make the connection that it's not a physical disc and therefore it should be cheaper.'"

Dobbs note: I see the majority of people are looking at this DLC vs. DVD/physical media as I do...@#%! DLC.
THANK YOU PEOPLE OF EARTH!

I totally agree on that. I don't mind DLC for addons but I would rather keep something physical around instead of some 1's and 0's on a magnetic hard drive. The same reason why Vinyl continues to sell more and more each year.

Honestly it all comes down to the resale factor. Why buy a game you are only going to play once, and may not like, and can not resale?
People would rather buy the real disc, and have that option to sell it in the future, to make some of their money back, or to go towards that next games purchase.
With digital, you can't do this, and that is the main underlying factor. When I was younger, and had very little money to buy new games, GameStop was a godsend. I can imagine it is still that way now for the majority of the world, even moreso since we are slowly comming out of a recession.

I am surprised that 25% said they would prefer digital copies.
Personally I wouldn't buy something in digital form unless it was at least half the price and I could no longer buy the physical version. I don't even understand how anyone can think the two versions should cost the same. Are they saying it doesn't cost money to print the discs, manuals, cases and ship them to retailers?
There is also no collection factor to digital content. It makes me happy to see my collection or show it to someone else who enjoys video games. How impressed would you be if someone showed you a hard drive and said check out my sweet video game collection?

Exactly. You can not sale a code thats already redeemed, or something thats linked to your XBL/PSN account, unless you sale the whole thing..
And im personally not against the DLC. As long as its worth it. And so far its never been. Worse cases i know:
Both Assassins creed 1 and 2 had DLCs planned EVEN BEFORE THEY RELEASED. Precise date: AS#2 first dlc released barely ONE month after the game was out.
WHAT THE FUCK?
Dont tell me it wasnt ready at game's launch date.. I wont believe. Why the hell dont you include it in the game?
Call Of Duty 6:
2 DLCs so far, each has 3 new maps, and 2 recycled from cod4. Not that bad, isnt? Well yes: 1200 microsoft points. Close to 20 bucks. Fuck you activision, seriously.
Back on topic about original/digital copies: the only advantage of digital is commodity, the media will never scratch, or get lost. Thats a plus. But the only i can think of. And in my case, and i bet thats the case of many, im scared of deleting them from my hard disk, if in a long time id want to play them again, i will forget i would had downloaded them in the first place, and i bet i would even look for them cheap on ebay! I would think the first time i played them was renting them or at a friends house.. I wouldnt think "maybe i got them as a digital copy". Thats another downside.

Not to mention the markup the retailers make.

I don't even think the Assassins Creed DLC is even worth it. Does it even help advance the story? I knew Cod6 would have DLC. Everyone did. Its bullshit though. I paid fifteen dollars for the first maps and I will probably buy the other for fifteen dollars. That's 30 dollars total already half of what I spent for the game.
P.S. I only paid five buck for the first map because I chipped in with someone and I just downloaded it off of his account.

I know that in Xbox live, it will not keep a list of all the games you have purchased. On PSN however, it shows a list of your FULL purchase history, over the years.
I had forgotten I had so many Live Arcade games, so I had to go through my list of games played, which unfortunatly showed me not only purchased games but also the trial games and demos, and games I had played that my brother had bought, but I signed in on my profile and played splitscreen with live games that HE had purchased.
I had to try to remember what I bought and didn't, and as you can imagine, after 5 years of owning a 360, it can be quite tedious.
@Favrenation, thats why I bought my COD games on PC, free to play MP, dedicated servers that download mods while you are connecting, and best of all, FREE DLC/Map packs! Not to mention, playing with Mouse and Keyboard is way more accurate than controllers are.

I agree I would be very sad to see only DLC instead of games.

@Anthony PS3 has free multiplayer. I never understand why people like mouse and keyboard better than dual analog control. I tried playing assault cube and quake 3 on my computer and I am a lot worse with that than a controller. I actually hooked my ps3 controller up to my computer and did better.
Staying on topic... I would boycott all the systems if they went to DLC only like the PSP Go. That thing is a joke.
