Under News from the website:
Welcome to QUAKE LIVE

In addition to the 'Standard' free-to-play version, today we've announced our 'Premium' and 'Pro' subscriptions -- adding new maps, game modes, and plenty more. Details below…

The Premium Subscription, which can be purchased for $1.99 per month, billed annually, includes:

* Access to 20 QUAKE LIVE Premium only maps at launch with more to come.
In addition to the 'Standard' free-to-play version, today we've announced our 'Premium' and 'Pro' subscriptions
I'm pretty sure they are just adding maps to the game for subscription. I knew about the subscription thing for awhile. ID tech said that they weren't making enough money off of ads which to me is justified.

EDIT: for 1.99 a month that's not that bad anyway. You get new maps not found in quake 3. If you don't want to pay go play the original quake 3 for PC. There is plenty activity going on on the PC servers.

Heck, eventually the maps will either be converted or recreated for PC Quake 3 anyway.

I tried Quake Live before, and it ran horrible for me, but I also didn't care to much to solve it, I'm a Quake guy not any of the sequels.
