I have a strong love for this sort of genre, and it seems that some of the best are on the dreamcast.

Whats your fav & why? Bonus; give honorable mentions (ninja-macabre uses this for finding unknown & new games to play )



Ikaruga is my #1 fav, I have a dire love for this game. Every game on the poll (and linked below) i've played, most i've beaten, and Ikaruga takes the cake. Out of any shmups, on any console...ever. I have yet to be impressed as much as I was by this game on release, and compelled to play this game compared to others of the same genre.

A close second is Trigger Heart, as I love the grapple mechanic (its finding itself played more and more as I've basically memorized ever single pixel of Ikaruga), and a 3rd would be Last Hope (let's go ahead and say Pink Bullets version here since sometimes I don't want to kill myself while playing a game...).




Since there is a cap at 10 options here, I'll post the more "standard" or, in my opinion, "typical" shmups (open to debate, so do comment!). There's ALOT more games, like;

Mars Matrix, Castle Shikigami 2, Bangai-O, Radilgy, Gunbird 2, Chaos Field, Trizeal, Psyvariar 2




My honorable mentions; Radiant Silvergun for saturn, MUSHA on genesis (wii vc also), & raiden III on ps2 (being the "newest" console shmup i have ignoring new dreamcast releases).

Zero gunner 2 all the way baby! I prefer full screen, and top down 3d, which it fills all the criteria.

I don't know, I just like the movement it alows me to do, I can rotate the chopper, and attack from any direction.

I just like top down better in general I guess, and I can't wait for Fast Striker! The graphics and soundtrack are simply mind blowingly amazing.

Ghost Pilots from Neo Geo is awesome too, I play it on Neogeo4all with like 50 games on a disc, and it is kinda like 1942.

not putting metalslug on there made me chose other.

I guess metal slug could be a horizontal shoot em up, but as far as i know the only legit metal slug on the dc was the emulated neo4all port of #2?

I feel ashamed for not even mentioning r-type on ps2 (final), tis an awesome game.

If I have to pick only one then Under Defeat.

Also really love the Giga Wing series and Zero Gunner 2.

I think Under Defeat and Zero Gunner 2 share the same formula, choppers that can rotate any direction on screen. I like Under Defeat too, but I wish it was full screen, not just in tate mode.

I also forgot about the amazing parodius series. Does anyone know much about the supposed wii release? Is it out / ever going to happen?
