Unreal tournament modding?

I know (hope) that there is still work being done trying to bring UT back online with the dreamcast, but one thing I never see is any mods done for the dc version of the game.

I still play this on my computer very often, and was looking in to some extra skins to add to my selectable list (although I usually play with Scud irregardless), and was wondering how easy it would be to add some of those skins to the dreamcast game.

I know size would be an issue, but think it would be very cool to add, or replace, some of the in game character skins just to give the game a fun new look. Some people even posted two skin packs for UT03, which would be just awesome to add updated characters to the game that actually belong to the game franchise (even more recent updates are of the necris race from the newer game). Or make a PSO character based game, or a simpsons based game, ect.

Any ideas if this is possible?

edit; i should mention its easier to download these due to that sites ease of use.

cant imagine it being the most difficult thing to change the skins of models. then again i dont know a whole lot bout how one does mod a dc game so im just basing it off the fact that its a port of the pc version most mods could b ported to the dc

I don't know too much about unpacking or dumping dc games, but if the unreal game has folders for textures and sound or music and maps and system then i think that is all it would take. But I wouldn't know how to take that modified file and convert it back to an ISO

I keep having fun ideas for this, like replacing Xan's skin with the custom made shodans from system shock, and having her portrait all over the hyperblast level, and maybe replacing his taunts with her in game computer updates... would be sooooo cool.

There is also a damn impressive invader zim and gir custom skin + models, as well as an American mcgee's Alice skin + model that has game ripped voice taunts and avatar animations. Some of the work people have put into these things is just amazing, would be awesome to see it working on the dreamcast.

Edit; what I might do, since I have a huge pile of ideas but no skill to perform them, is offer a comission for each level + character skin, maybe harass the members of a few unreal forums.... could then do the unreal gold thing and leave props of those designers at the beginning of the level

I just don't know how much of this is possible with the dreamcast limited ability for polygon and the size of the character models.

I think the best ones to ask are over at the HLDC modding forums, they should have more than enough experience on what to do.

I do know that Quake Arena also has had textures modded on the DC version.

That was done with this program methinks.

Sorry for dely in reply. That sonic quake paint up is pretty neat.

I recall being able to view some of the files and once I get to a computer with an actual disc drive (don't mock the netbook!), I'm going to see what I can dump.

I know now that it is possible to;

extract maps
extract a character model (unsure how different "skins" or characters are assigned yet)

What I still need to figure out is size limits (character models, adding textures/models to maps), and how balanced the game will be (playability) when (and if) modified (or replaced) models are compiled into a .cdi image.

Before I go rampant on the various unreal communities, I think it would be more fun to take in ideas from the dreamcast community for the unreal dreamcast game (like the above mentioned hyperblast to systemshock 2 and xan to shodan switch).

But before I bother doing that, would you guys actually like to see something like this put together? It will take me quite a bit of time to get the $ to commission the actual level of work that I'd like to see in this, but this is my second favorite Unreal version to date, and wouldn't mind making a tribute disc for my tribute Unreal dreamcast system.

Man, I don't play this game offline becuase it is a MP game at heart, and I own UT04 and UT3, and love the games and graphics.

Any mods of DC games I welcome with open arms! I am suprised we don't see more Quake 3 Arena and UT mods, but I guess it is different from the PC version, but we are very lucky Half-Life is so close to the PC version as modding that game is so easy.
