Few questions about actually doing a translation to Segagaga

Hi,
I'm a big fan of the Sega Dreamcast, I actually live in Japan and I own this awesome game, Segagaga. It was never translated successfully and today I was talking to my friend about it. We sat down and played. It's an amazing and funny game and we have the knowledge needed to translate this game.
We aren't programmers, we are mostly linguists, but I have good knowledge on how to use computers and I learn fast. After a short session and a brain storm, we don't think it wouldn't take too long to translate all the texts/cinematics.
I know a team tried to do it during 6-7 years and wasn't successfull in doing it.
We have the time and will to do it.
I'm sure nowaday there is programs that can help doing what we wanna do, and we can provide our knowledge of Japanese language.
Please, give us all the advices you could give us.
We have a full time job here, but we do have 5 hours available per day to work on this project.
