are we in danger of losing some online games? Starlancer? Max Pool? 4x4?

4x4, starlancer, and max pool can all be hosted independently of gamespy. DC-Talk already hosts its own 4x4 and max pool servers. The server software/setup for starlancer was reverse engineered a number of years ago (http://dreamcast.onlineconsoles.com/php ... php?t=6567)

As far as I know, all the currently online games are considered "online forever"

The only game GameSpy actually hosts is Starlancer. 4x4 EVO allowed you to sign into a GameSpy account and see your friends list but it wasn't actually hosted by them. The official server was hosted by Terminal Reality until last year when they shut the server down. Hopefully the private server for Starlancer will be up and running soon so we have a smooth transition.

I'm so glad that we won't really be affected by this! :D Will we have to download a modified version of Starlancer to play on the new server?

Damn that's lame. We don't have the gamespy software setup right now we will need to figure out how to get it working and whatnot. If we host a server for StarLancer you should be able to use your retail copy and connect using our DNS server.

It's a shame but we knew this day would come eventually. We will see what we can do with the server that Luigi released for Starlancer.

If there are any bugs with the public servers, now would be the time to log packets from the official servers to document how they work. Once they go offline, any functions that the homebrew servers lack may be impossible to replicate, depending upon how much those games depend upon the server for functionality.

saw this news today and immediately thought of the online DC games ;) Good to see things are probably mostly covered.
