So I only have American Dreamcasts so far and none of them can read Japanese characters in my save files on the VMU menu screen (they give me random characters instead). Does anyone know if the link83 region-free bios will show Japanese characters?

This is unfortunately a limitation of the Dreamcast bios. Link83 bios won't fix it. If you want the Japanese characters to display correctly you will need to set the language to Japanese.

Wow, I'm an idiot. I never even checked the language settings. Thank you, that solves that problem.
