Dreamcasts with gamecube/xbox/ps2 style cases (and question for longtime fans)

This is really a question for 20+ year longtime fans, but I am trying to remember where the photos of these case mods originally came from:

https://www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/ ... e-its.html

I vaguely remember seeing these reported on in some online gaming news like IGN probably around 2001. My vague memory is a Japanese gaming magazine had commissioned these case mods and then used pictures of them in an article they were doing covering how Sega was now developing games for gamecube/xbox/ps2.

Anyways, my interest in these has been renewed because the gamecube case mod from these pics was actually found for sale very recently and a dreamcast fan is in the process of buying it. It looks a little worse for wear these days (pics here: https://imgur.com/a/hXj12Gw ), but its unmistakably the same case mod from those pics. You can even see screw holes from where the gamecube style handle used to be inserted.

So... anyone remember a bit more than I do about where these things came from, and maybe what magazine the article was in? Or better yet, anyone have a copy of the article?

Here's an old topic on dcemulation referring to them. Doesn't give much info about where they came from though. https://dcemulation.org/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=23970

The images linked in the dcemulation topic are not saved by archive.org, but I was able to translate some of the descriptions in Japanese, purportedly by the case modder, that I think corresponded to the pictures of the case mods. Maybe these wound up featured in a magazine, but were not themselves commissioned by the magazine?

The third and final part of Custom Dreamcast. (perhaps)

The first order was a "Mega Drive + Mega CD" style with a "karaoke unit" attached.
However, if I did that, it would just be black and it would feel too new, so I immediately suggested making it look like the latest GameCube.

This is the third time I've repainted Dreamcast, and I thought there was no trick to just changing the color, so I decided to add a handle, which is the most distinctive feature of the GameCube!

But of course there is no space to attach such a thing to the back of DreamCast, so I could only attach a very small handle.

When I was thinking about it, my friend M said lightly, ``Just cut the lid off.''
I thought to myself, ``Just because I don't do it myself, I'll just have to take it easy!'' But that's true, so I started working on it.

Fill in the decoration near the access lamp on the lid to make it circular, cut out the triangular part on the opening/closing joint side, and fill up the body with putty (Arteco SSP) to create space for the handle.

For the handle, I asked my friend M to make a pattern on a computer and cut it out from plastic vanity. It's hollow and not very strong, so if you lift it by the corners, it will break. (lol)

For the main unit's logo, my friend M took the "NINT"END"O" part and changed it to "SEGA END."

I've played around with DreamCast three times, but the truth is, I've never played a DreamCast game before.

The custom dreamcast that I thought would end up being "GameCube style" took an unexpected turn when the client moved!
As I was moving, I lined up my 7 (!) Dreamcasts and decided that I didn't want an Xbox, so I ordered it.
Since we added a handle to the ``GameCube-like'' model, we couldn't just change the color like in ``DC2,'' so it became a major remodel.

First, for the center disc, I asked my younger brother to cut out a round shape from the acrylic plate using the NC lathe at work, and then he carved it into a lens shape by hand (hey, I'm tired).
I pasted a reverse version of the logo on the back (which turned out to be the same as the original version) and painted it fluorescent green.
When the "XBox" was first announced, I thought it would look like this and be shiny, but when it was actually commercialized...

By the way, the "X" in the logo is not "X" but "X" or "X DC X" (←Hide)

For the ato, I made a frame out of plastic vane so that the disc part would be filled in, filled it with putty, and made the side fins out of plastic van, and it was completed!
It was bigger than the ones I usually make, and the amount of putty consumed was amazing, and I really felt that it was a 1:1 ratio.

When I placed the order, my younger brother said something like, ``They (XBox and Dreamcast) are similar, so please make a little bit of it.'' So I showed him the item and asked him, ``Tell me what's similar!'' and he said, ``It's just the color.'' "It would have been better to have it replaced," he said.
Apparently it was my recklessness (crying)

...Well, it was a hit, so it's good.

PS2 case mod

■Work name/Dreamcast “2”
■Completed/2001.5.16

My younger brother had an idea and said, ``It would be hilarious if we made Dreamcast into a PlayStation 2 version,'' and it looked interesting, so I made it.

So I had wanted a PlayStation 2 for a long time, so I took this opportunity to make a ridiculous request, saying, ``Give me a PlayStation 2 for reference!'' But at the time I was denied, but later I made a ``Ferrari-style'' version, a ``GameCube-style'' version. He sent me a PS2 as a reward.

I'll just say it and see.

The PlayStation 2 has a distinctive shape, but the color tone is relatively normal black, so if it were left as is, it might look like a black Saturn, so in order to make it look like that, I changed the front controller terminal panel. I drew the blue gradation used on the PlayStation 2's base. I laughed out loud at how quickly it started to look like PlayStation 2.

The "DC2" logo is a self-made decal. Produced by my friend M. The SEGA logo was also changed to a SONY-like font in a malicious manner.

After delivery, I was asked to copy the logo, so I painted another controller. With this, the pachimonkusasa will increase!

Of course, only DreamCast software works (lol)

Uncanny timing. Someone's well-loved GameCube-style paintjob is on display.

Saw that. I've been talking to the poster of that topic about it. I have no doubt it's the same mod as in the old pictures
