A preservation group named "Forest of Illusion" has just released the source code for the PS1 and PC versions of the original Wipeout! If anyone wants to attempt a Dreamcast port, feel free.
Very curious to hear from one of the more technical savvy users how difficult a possible port to Dreamcast would be. Would be crazy to see an iconic game like Wipeout run natively on Dreamcast.
Although DC has a lot of racing games, I would actually love to see this. The Saturn version looked great, but the framerate suffered greatly.
This was one of those games that I feel if it had been built for the Saturn, it would have ran much better rather than just porting it over from the PS1 and trying to get things to work.
Such an awesome game! I would LOVE to see this make it over to the DC! If anybody wants to see how the PC version looks like with hardware accelerated gfx, which is what would be best ported over, you can see some good gameplay here.
"In 1996, an OEM edition of Wipeout was bundled with new Sony Vaio PC's utilizing ATI's 3D Rage chipset. This 3D accelerated edition using the ATI3DCIF API provided additional resolutions of up to 640x480 pixels as well as bilinear filtering. "
I did find this while looking for info on this API it used. Not sure how easily it would be to convert to GL. The page here is informative maybe to anybody attempting porting to PC to try and get it looking like that.
I never was able to play these games that well. Even the PS3 reboot had a big learning curve too I think. Maybe I am just bad at racing games with this type of sliding/drifting mechanic, similarly I am bad at Sega Rally 2, but Out Run 2 I am a pro with that.
^ Interesting that the PC port pictured above shows the sort of polygon jittering you would see on PSX games. I take it the DC would be capable of an extended draw distance and widescreen fov .
I wonder how far Psygnosis got with their unreleased Wipeout game for the DC, guess it would have been a souped up port of Wipeout 3.

No guarantees on this but I'm currently petitioning Hi-Rez Studios to release the source code for the original Tribes game. They released the game as...
