I finally got Planetweb 2.62 to work on a consistent basis. The problem with the solution is that I have to set my serial port speed to 19200 bps to get Planetweb to connect; that is roughly 18.75 Kbps. So, transfer speeds will be pretty slow on Planetweb 2.62.

that's some pretty slow surfing. have you tested other versions of Pweb?

did you say this guide was done using Jaunty jackalope? is Jaunty jackalope the latest Ububtu? 9.04? i installed Ubuntu on a separate drive a while back. my old distribution would not work for some reason. so i downloaded a new one. im pretty sure it was 9.04, if your guide is based on that one i might give the guide a try. i already have a PC-DC server on windows 98 but i have heard that linux can be better to use.

Not yet. I really need to try some other versions of Pweb. Planetweb is now almost unusable because of how slow it is; I guess barely working is better than not working at all. Dream Passport is so much faster by comparison.

The main problem is that I have never gotten CD burning to work properly under a VM. I don't currently have a native install of Windows on either my desktop or laptop so I can't use DiscJuggler; it won't be until about late August before I install Windows natively again. I still haven't found a piece of Linux software that can burn cdi images.

As for Ubuntu, you are right about the version. Jaunty Jackalope is the codename for release 9.04. That is the version that I am currently using. The guide is meant to be generic so that it can be used with various Linux distributions but it does use a lot of Ubuntu examples. The guide can definitely be improved but it does give the major steps for making things work.

Luckily, DiscJuggler now works properly under Wine; it did not work when I tried it over a year ago. I downloaded and burned Planetweb 3.0 and that works just fine.

Any way you could suggest to a Linux dummy a quick and concise way of learning the 1979 Unix type software without enrolling into a painful Linux workshop? I've recently obtained three books on Linux, and my head is spinning because of the 10,000 distributions.

I have Gentoo from the Gentoo organization (AMD 64+ live CD, another thing for Linux newbies to know, gotta match the processor/board type with the Linux software).

Understand, I am very happy and appreciate what you are doing, I'm trying my best at attempting to learn it and need a direction to do so. I want to learn enough to maybe help you out on my end. My buddy who has a degree in Computer Sciences (UNIX with some Linux) said that most of the UNIX commands usually work in Linux but the distributions vary.

I can't wait to give this new guide a go. I had some trouble with the netbsd one. I'll give it a good shot with my pc once it's built, but I might try with the netbook running Fedora 11 as well just for kicks.

I just picked up a usb modem (this one), and I can't seem to find it when I run dmesg.

Are many usb modems not detectable in linux? Should I go with a serial modem?

I actually went back and read some of my chats with darkmoon who wrote the netbsd guide, and most usb modems will NOT work in linux. Some usrobotics ones are advertised as supported but not mine. Every serial modem will work though.

the downside is that most mobos these days don't have a serial port handy, and it also means you need an AC adapter.
