Controller port problems

Post by tz101 »

I bought a third party controller, made by Performance. It proceeded to fry my controller ports. I have read everything from replacing the "5 ohm resistor" at location F1 on the controller PCB with a 10 ohm resistor, to replacing the ".39 amp pico fuse" at location F1 on the controller PCB with a .5-1.5 amp pico fuse.

OK. So is it a resistor or a fuse that I need to replace at location F1? And how do I keep third party controllers from doing similar damage in the future?

Another guy suggested simply twisting the blown resistor/fuse to make the wire legs contact each other. I did that as a temporary fix, but using my Performance controller renders my DC useless for about a minute or two until excess voltage dissipates. So I can only successfully use my stock DC controller until I get this fixed.

Anyone with the correct repair for this situation?

the easiest and fastest thing to do is to get rid of that 3rd party controller. the controller might even be faulty. your controller ports should not be harmed by a controller, its that simple.

The dreamcast does has a resistance that acts like a fuse, to much power and it simply burns to protect the dc, replacing the fuse/resistance with a simple paper clip works good, but if something drains to much power then the fan, the gd-rom, the screen on the television, they will all start to fail.

Verify if that controler is in good shape, a short circuit (2 wires touching each other on the cable) is enough to fry any resistance, so check that 1st.

Just one thing, a resitance with a really low value is basicly the same as a fuse, so having one or the other is basicly the same.

My sugestion, sell that controller and buy a dreamcast official controler.

On 2 of my Dreamcast's I've removed the F1 resistor and soldered a pin in to join the contacts.
Dreamcast, it's still thinking.

I did it to, because i was melting really big resistances at the time, then i found out the problem was the controler itself, it zapped all the power from the dreamcast due to a short circuit
