Hey,
After having played some 16-bit DOS games on my old Windows 7 tower, I happened to chance upon this link:
http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/ntvdmx64.html
It provides a version of NTVDM for 64-bit processors (NTVDMx64). I tried to install it once, didn't get it, then tried again with compatibility mode set to "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)," and I ran it with "Run as administrator." After the install and recommended reboot, my 64-bit CPU can natively play my DOS games. This is an unofficial patch, so download at discretion. This might work on Windows 10?
(I don't know if this video works for anybody; it didn't for me.
Give this a try if you want to avoid DOSBOX.
It played SKUNNY KART at full speed.

Re: Windows 7 16-bit/DOS support
Oh nice! I gave up on DOSBox ages ago, never got it to run anything. Will give this a go next time I feel up to the challenge.
