Dreamcast 4XM video testing

What are the current optimal settings found so far? How does data rate in the compressor correspond to bit per second (bps) in the output video file? I've only used bps in conversions I've done in the past.

so it seems like the bitrate to use for the video file b4 you use 4xm_comp is somewhere in the 5000-9000 range.
video : 640x368, 25fps, 5000-9000 bitrate
audio : 128kbps 44.1khz stereo MP3

last test used 192kbps 44.1 stereo mp3 so try dropping to 128kbps to see if the video improves without slowdown.
try 7000 bitrate since that is between 5000-9000
or try whatever you want, you might find that settings can be higher.

in 4xm_comp:
put 25 in the speed field
put 1 in the data rate field and hit ok - it will pop up with a range of values to use. (choose minimum at least this is what i have been doing)
but choose somewhere in the range it suggests.

we have been using avi to 4xm but you could try something else.

it always shows 800000 by default...but if you put 1 in the field after you have loaded the video file to convert and where to save the 4xm and the speed field... it will give a pop up based on the speed (fps) and resolution (640x368)....it will suggest a range to use.

Btw if your dreamcast is little worn or the gdrom is not that great you will have problems same as cdrs of the movies starting prolly need to dummy as well to push it to the faster part to read

that one is from the sdk, the one in the script is from an official released dreamON demo disk.
we probably should test both though.

I have never got it to work I did compile a version and it works but this was included with katana r11 marked for dreamon

Pretty sure you have to hack the bin to work like the samples example it does not try and load any pvr just black screen when i try it

Ok, so I set up a testing workspace on my Windows 7 x64 pc.
I created an input file of 10s, 700k bps vbr, 25 fps, 640x368, mp3 44.1k 64k mono, cbr filesize 1,168,288 bytes.
Encoded using compressor with 25 fps, 184000 data rate. Results: encode time 4m46s, filesize 1,868,464, cpu usage 25%.
The resulting "test.4xm" played under smplayer, although the property information displayed is all wonky.
Made dreamon CDI with script. Under demul - OK. Under GDEMU - OK, video is acceptable, but I would not call it DVD quality. So, as @SMith said, finding the right bitrate is the trick.

So at 700k, I would estimate:
4m30s per megabyte of input file.
size of output file will increase by 1.60.

That will create a really large output file. Would not be practical if we want to use a long video using dreamon. Clearly, this 4xm format was made for small files. The Sega docs says maximum length of 3m for the dreamon submissions. Downloading your CDI now.
