GDEMU/PSU heat issues?

Post by PrinceOfBrains »

Hey everyone!

Running into a somewhat surprising issue with my GDEMU-modded DC, hoping maybe someone smarter than me can shed some light on it. Lemme try to breakdown the history real quick:
  • Modded a DC with a GDEMU way back in 2015 or 2016, never had any problems until recently
  • Moved into a new house, using DC on same SDTV as always, started running into a lot of issues with loading - after a certain point, game audio would stop, the game itself would freeze, and when I'd turn the system off and back on, it would load very slowly and not recognize the GDEMU ("please insert game disc" screen would come up)
  • Figured the GDEMU was just too old, ordered a 5.15 clone on Aliexpress, installed it no problem
  • Played DC games for an hour or two, same problem cropped up - checked all connections, screws, etc
  • Problem went away after letting it sit for a while, and problem never cropped up when testing it while system is topless
It leads me to believe at this point that it's an issue with the system overheating, but if that's the case I'm admittedly surprised, as I had my older GDEMU in this thing for YEARS with no issues, so I'm worried the PSU is starting to go south.

Anyone else run into similar issues? I know there's a few mods to avoid heat issues in a DC (3D printing a mount for the GDEMU, some mod with resistors I'm too dumb to understand), so if there's anything I can do for this current one to avoid having to get it repaired/replace the DC entirely, that would be sick. (Do bear in mind that, as you're explaining this to me, you're talking to the biggest idiot ever, so you might have to use small words and deal with my questions.)

Thanks!!

I have a GDEMU Cooke with an original PSU and haven’t had heat issues. I don’t use the 3-printed enclosure either (mine didn’t fit). I am using an HDMI adapter that converts the RGB signal via VGA, and I’ve read that the RGB output uses the 12v rail, therefore preventing potential heat issues, but I can’t confirm this. The resistor mod isn’t a bad idea, but it’s not the most elegant lol. Someone more knowledgeable than me could probably give more advice though.
