Update time...

If we refer back to madsheep's post on Page 9, three of the four main objectives are completed:
1) We need main bin file to be fully translated (megavolt85 fixed the font problem also translated some important text)
2) .mes dialog files need to be translated (This is easy from technical perspective)
3) .sfd movie files need to be re-encoded with subs (This is easy from technical perspective)

4) Need to extract, edit and compress all the resources from .mrg (archive) files (images logos and UI elements) (We have a primitive extraction tool only)
Now, it's on to translating the main binary, which also holds one of the big engineering challenges: we need about 30% more text to make a good translation of the in-game dialogue. This will take some clever engineering to store the extra text somewhere unused in the binary and dynamically assign it to the correct dialogue location as needed.

That said, I've been able to at least start translating text in the binary that doesn't require more space than the original SJIS; things like menu commands, item names, location names, and the like.

Anyway, I'll try to upload a video sometime in the next week here showing off some of these as well as some of the translated MES files (such as the famous Alex Kidd scene!).

Make sure to give a round of thanks and appreciation to all the technical rockstars that have helped to make this a reality. I can't thank them enough for jumping in and lending their expertise. Thank you, everyone!

Sheesh, already almost the end of February? Time be passing...

Apologies for not uploading a progress video. Basically been doing my day job + SGGG non-stop. Got a few work items to tick off tomorrow AM and then hoping to do a quick recording of...drum roll...a completely translated Chapter 1! The initial translation is entirely complete--meaning, every NPC you talk to, every boss encounter, etc, it's all in English. And I've been working through Chapter 2, which has a huge amount of text. Maybe 30% through it.

This game is such a beautiful Sega treasure, I hope you all are enjoying this translation journey!

Who would think that 24 years later...

Is there any chance you would share a GDI of chapter 1? Not to be impatient, but to get a taste of what the game is all about. I really haven't seen much of it (for obvious reasons), and while I do have an idea of what it's like, it might provide a good preview for everyone who's been following the progress all these years and drum up more interest (and encouragement!)

Also happy to wait until it's all done, if that's what you'd prefer—and totally understandable.

Just thought I'd ask :)

As much as I miss the demo disc scene of yesteryear, I'm not working in isolation on this and I don't think it'd be fair to all the other contributors to release something that doesn't represent their signed-off work. Also, files live on the internet forever, and I wouldn't want folks in the future getting confused over which patch is the demo and which is the final release... :)

That said, I finally got around to making a walkthrough video of the fully translated Chapter 1! This should give you a good sense of what the game is about.

It also includes some of Chapter 2, which I'm probably 80% through. Enjoy, everyone!

Amazing stuff - and I think we can all respect your reasons for not posting a playable demo. I can definitely see it getting mixed up with another release later on for some people.

Keep up the outstanding work! Incredible to finally see some real progress.

DC-Talk friends! Figured it's time for an update since it's been almost a month.

We are making some great progress. Much of the game's main story has been translated at this point and now I'm working through all the SIMEVT strings (of which there are a LOT). That said, I don't want to get everyone's hopes up too much that release is close because there's still an absolute TON of translation review that has to happen, and that is going to take quite some time. The main binary is huge--around 8,000 or so rows of Japanese text, and multiple lines of dialogue within many of those rows.

This is literally like an iceberg project in that when I started working through the 1,800 rows in the MES files, I thought that was a lot. Little did I know...

To keep it fun, I pick an area to focus on and work through that. So in-between debugging the SIMEVT, I've been finishing the enemy descriptions and the "developed games" descriptions. The developed games are those that your in-game development team can create, and consist mostly of real-life SEGA games and a few "parody" games.

The descriptions of these are particularly fun because there's humorous or insightful commentary on each by Hitmaker, so you can read their thoughts on things like The House of the Dead for Saturn or Sega Bass Fishing ("Get Bass") on Dreamcast.

Anyway, that about covers it. Once again, thank you to my incredible teammates (you know who you are!) for enabling this project with technical expertise, tool development, and more. They are absolute rockstars, and I can't express my appreciation enough--so I'll at least memorialize it in these posts. Thank you!
