idk how the game knows who made what moves, but it is indeed done with email. this game is hard to get to work because of the SMTP on most peoples ISPs. i tested tons of email services and didnt get to far. the best i could do was send out a move using my PC and Gmail. after a few hours of this bullshit i gave up.

So how can you be positive its done by email if youre saying you dont know how its done?

Im no server programmer, but this makes no sense at all.

But the packet that makes the move itself on the game can NOT be an email. Email is multimedia. There's no way it can affect whatsoever into a game. No way. smtp is required for authentication and those moves notification (i played it years ago, don't remember how it work), but there MUST be something else.
It a lot simpler than you think. I make a move. Then it sends an email from my account to the others guys email informing him that I made a move and now it is his turn. Then he logs onto the game and makes a move which in turn sends an email informing the other person to make a move. Its not live. I think it just sends some save file to fill in for the other opponent,
So how can you be positive its done by email if you're saying you don't know how its done?
Because its a game inside Planet web browser. You can do email in planet web.

Well thats a weird system.. I know sega swirl was a low budget game.. But that much!? Still its hard to believe...

And is the thing that manages that "save file movement" in within the mail managed by the game itself?

Interfaces/Ports 1 x RJ-45
RJ-45 is ethernet how are you going to plug that into your dreamcast?

Sega swirl was some game one of the developers made for fun and was included on demo disc too. Have you even looked at sega swirl? You can play it on your computer and it is fun.

Here is what it says in the WIKI:
Both versions allowed one to compete with another human player via email (Dreamcast players may also play against PC players through this).

EDIT: the save file thing was a guess.

Hi Michael

There is a cheaper solution to the one that I sent previous, the only difference is that this has a db25 serial interface rather then Rj45 serial interface.

I will attach the link below:

I think this would be the best solution for you to directly connect a modem.
