What US Controller Color/Variants Were avalible?

Post by TheBigAndy »

Just got my 2nd dreamcast (first I had from 2000-2002), its a Sega Sports edition) And was wondering where I can find a reference list of all the different controller types that were available in the US. I am only interested in First party equipment, and I would like to thank you in advance.

In the US there were only two versions of the system sold, with a massive % of all controllers just the white ones. You could only get black controllers with the Sports Editions System (not sold separately), but sega did sell alot of color'ed controllers (the majority being "smoke," some blue red and greens, and for some reason, slightly fewer yellow.

Same goes for the vmu's. The market has a massive % of white and "smoke" vmu's, alot of green and blues, slightly fewer red's, and even fewer yellow's.

Japanese releases are different. They have a large # of special consoles (two colored variations of hello kitty, two color variations of resident evil ones, one being only 1800 made, the other being only 200 made, a series of "color consoles" where 200 of each color were made, seaman special, ect)

^ that is one of the 200 "black" consoles, its like the sega sports one, but japanese, and absolutely NO markings.

I always felt that making the dreamcast white was a huge mistake. It was claimed that it was a reference to the original saturn in japan, but honestly, when it was 1996, did you know what color the japanese saturn was? Or care? Sega should have just released the white ones in japan.

Its such a stupid idea, making a console out of white plastic. Even 360's can look yellow'ed and tarnished, and the controllers show dirt and grime so obviously.

It was around the dc-era that console painting and modifying became really popular as well. In my opinion, it was due to this error of judgment.

If your a collector, then you can always make your own stuff;

*the 4 controllers that say "SEGA" are all in my display setup, and never used to play. They were made by taking excess / broken sports edition controllers and swaping out the collored portions of US controllers, and they have matching vmus!

I made a second red & black one because its my fav color, and goes with my customized dreamcast

Same with the lightgun. I have a dcx black lightgun as well, but havn't the faintest as to where it is, i only have a massive footlocker of sega hardware :lol:

The all black one (with the only white analog stick / cord), is a japanese colored "smoke" one, which unlike the US releases, has that millennium edition logo, and the back shell was clear, and the controller cord male plug is also "smoke."

I have another sports edition controller, and i'm tempted to swap out parts to make an all black "smoke" controller, but i really like that clear male plug, and idk if i can take that off the original cord.

edit edit; those are original rumble packs, how often do you see a "smoke" or yellow one? :mrgreen:
