Sega: 'Never say never' on Shenmue 3

Post by Anthony817 »

Wow, CVG did an article on "Would you buy Shenmue 3?", and it got Sega to stand up and notice! They got hundreds of responses, and they had this to say...
The president of Sega West, Mike Hayes, noted the reaction. He told CVG:

"While at present we have no plans for the franchise [on next-gen consoles], the response to CVG's question has certainly shown the Shenmue legacy ignites a lot of passion among fans. Never say never..."

It seems they actually read our online stuff 8-) ... nah, it's cewl to see SEGA chairmen reply to online gossip, it shows they didn't forget about their backbone...

Look, after Shenmue online was canceled, all hope was lost. Now with Shenmue city coming out, all those Dreamcast re-releases on current gen consoles, and Sonic creator saying he wants to design a "Dreamcast 2"(which is highly improbable), there is a lot of renewed interest in anything Dreamcast related.

Hey, it's almost 2011, anything is possible with enough financial backing. Once they release Shenmue 1 and 2 on current consoles with an HD facelift they can use that money to build Shenmue 3 if enough folks buy them.

I see your point and I read about your arguments, which seem promising. Following SEGA at this very moment seems to result into hope for a next-gen SEGA console (read: Dreamcast 2 / Segadrive - hidious name btw).

SEGA definitely is expanding their market share and besides that, they recently released their new and improved arcade system. Based on that, a next-gen console could be released. They should time well though...

If, and only if, they release a next-gen console, Shenmue 3 should be exclusive for that one. It would be a major wish-list launch item for their console (I'd personally just buy one for Shenmue 3). Their financial situation seems to be really positive (+300MLN profit), so no doubt they have room for such a project...

Yeah, they had their profits increase by leaps and bounds over last year, I think they are putting their decade long financial problems behind them and looking to change for the western market, and the western market Americas, Europe and Australia seem to want an "eastern" game like Shenmue 3. They said they needed to change for us, so lets hope they make some kind of comeback.

Agree, however I can only conclude this for Europe (I'm from the Netherlands). I notice more and more people getting into anime-like stuff, which started with Pokemon (that hype is far over) and DBZ (every boy/man around 20-30 remembers that!). Due to this anime-like stuff, people tend to be more interested in Asian things, such as their games... Shenmue 3 would only do good if the current games experiences 1/2 though. So re-release these titles on XBL/PSN as a SEGA game (so people are familiar with SEGA) and release the console and Shenmue 3 exclusively on the new SEGA console...I'd say.

Same goes for other titles though... win the crowd, release, and keep the crowd.
