silly computer having a hard time taking vga input

Post by Macabre »

I've been slowly trying to get around to recording videos to share, and while i have all the hardware (i think), it appears that my current computer (a tiny gateway netbook), doesn't interpret vga input.

My last computer (a much heftier gateway solo pro laptop, that lasted me 9 years and was given a viking burning-out-in-the-water funeral upon its final demise), i was able to plug my dreamcast's vga box into it and hit fn + f5 or f6 to toggle between vga input & output.

This computer still has those assigned keys, and i can toggle vga output (send my desktop to my projector), but it doesn't seem to recognize my dreamcast's vga box.

Is it just that since this is a simple netbook that it isn't made to have vga signals sent to its screen?

I've never heard of a vga input being included with a PC. I think doc uses a vga to component converter paired with an HD capture card with component input to record from his vga box.

isn't it easier to hook all the shit up to a tv & record with a dvdrecorder? (I'm just guessing here, since I don't own a dvdrecorder ;))

Who knows, I've only ever recorded my PC games from my PC, so I'll be of no help here.

I wish I could record my Dreamcast though, cause I want to record the new Half-Life mods that were ported over to DC.

Anthony out of curiosity what software do you use for pc game recording?

I use CamStudio because it was a free download, and it lags a bit when I actually use my computer - since using the computer screen to play a game doesnt cause lag I'm guessing that the quality won't be weakened.

But that won't work if I ever want to record pc game play

If you want to record gameplay you can take the cheapass route and get an easycap that I use for like 9 dollars on amazon. The quality is a little better than vhs (unless you use sivdeo input). What 50inchDLP told me he records his video in S-video then deinterlaces it and changes the resolution of the game. He never said what capture card he uses but he probably uses a really nice one. like the haupage HD PVR.

VGA Input is an extreme rarity. Try hunting for a VGA capture card/device and you'll see it's also extremely expensive.

I use, rather I should say was using back in the day, a high-end Winfast Capture card with S-Video input. And prior to that major upgrade I was using a lowly entry level Hauppauge capture card.

I use Xfire, its an IM program you can use in almost any game, and it has features much like Xbox live, but for PC and is way more advanced. You can join friends games at the push of a button, and take screenshots and record videos from it totaly free unlike with Fraps, that puts a watermark on your video capture and you must buy for the full features.

Millions of PC gamers use it, and it is better than Steam IM features imho.

I have used it since 2006, and I highly recommend it to every hardcore PC gamer.
