I managed to prise my nine year old son off COD for a few minutes last night and introduce him to the Dreamcast for the first time. I got him playing 18 Wheeler and Space Channel 5 for a couple of hours and he really enjoyed them. When I put on Shenmue I was intrigued as to whether he'd like it or not. I shouldn't have worried. For the next few hours I sat and watched him winning prizes at the Tomato convenience store, wandering round Dobuita, playing darts and opening drawers whilst muttering to himself that he had found the best game in the world.
Later on, in bed, he asked me about getting a Dreamcast for christmas. I explained to him that they were no longer made but that I'd ask Santa about it.
Awww ahaha, that's awesome! Both my brothers (ages 8 and 10) are really into Dreamcast. It's their favorite thing. They always stop what they're doing to watch my father or I play as well.
WOW, I am always humbled to find newer generations that are into the Dreamcast. It is truly a unique console, in it's time and even today. It has over 700 retail games, and for a console that lasted only 2 years, it is an astronomical value! Plus, all the emulators and homebrew games it plays, and it is easily the system with the most games ever. You should turn him onto the NES and Neo Geo emulators, lots of great games to be had there too.
I remember buying my first Dreamcast for Radkin during the Boxing Day/Christmas holiday brand new at Toys'R'Us in 2001. She really loved it as well as I did. This is saying much for me being I was a die-hard Intellivision fanboy.
Last christmas I brought my dreamcast to the family get together, and had a soul calibur and DOA 2 tournament that involved like 8 kids between 6-12, switching off whenever someone lost. Kilik owned.
Well, sorta. I gave him the keys to my games cabinet and handed him my modded multiregion Resident Evil console to use when he likes. Should keep him happy.
