Dreamcast vs. This Generation (How it stacks up)
After a lot of copying and pasting game ratings from GameSpot, I've come up with some interesting statistics comparing the games of the Dreamcast to the games on today's consoles. This is of course a matter of opinion (namely GameSpot's) and doesn't include ratings for every game but I thought it would be interesting to see anyway.

I still think the best way to measure the dreamcasts impact/success etc vs other consoles is to see where its highest rated game got in the all time chart:
http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html
Until recently Soul Calibur was second ONLY TO the Ocarina Of Time, I think that kinda says it all. How the hell they can put Super Mario Galaxy and grand theft auto 4 above it is beyond me entirely. Mind you its innevitable as the number of eligible reviews for Soul Calibur on the DC dried up years ago and those other games are probably still being reviewed today.
Anyway some pretty interesting stats, you also have to consider that the Dreamcast had far less games released than any of the other consoles, so I think its pretty impressive its percentages are so high

Yeah, Soul Calibur is an awesome game! I never really liked fighting games until I played SC. It's one of very few games to get a perfect 10.0 rating from Gamespot.DCUltrapro wrote:I still think the best way to measure the dreamcasts impact/success etc vs other consoles is to see where its highest rated game got in the all time chart:

Yeah, it did pretty well in the stats. It even beat out all the others on highest percentage of games 9.0 or higher. It stomped all over the Wii in every category, lolDCUltrapro wrote: Anyway some pretty interesting stats, you also have to consider that the Dreamcast had far less games released than any of the other consoles, so I think its pretty impressive its percentages are so high

Re: Dreamcast vs. This Generation (How it stacks up)
Interesting read but ultimately I take it with a pinch of salt. Most charts are always biased towards a middle of the road, mainstream perspective and have little to offer the alternative audience of gamers just as charts for music, films skew their charts toward whichever is the highest grossing or best selling product. The websites that are used for this particular poll are staffed by failed writers and gaming wannabees who haven't a clue what makes a game or console truly great.
All I know is the Dreamcast made me passionate about games in a way that no console before or since has managed. Game for game I believe it trounces this generation's offerings. Off the top of my head I'd cite Shenmue 1&2, Okami, Rez, Space Channel Five 1&2, Lack Of Love, Fahrenheit, Jet Set Radio, Twilight Princess, Project Justice, MSR, F355, Under Defeat, Gitaroo Man, Dark Chronicles, Skies Of Arcadia, Virtua Tennis and Rayman 2 as a bunch of previous generation games that stand head and shoulders above this generation's finest. And if I were stuck on a desert island and had to pick between my list and that chart then I'd pick mine everytime ! lol
I guess game reviewing is a very subjective occupation but I will never base my opinions on those advocated by the 'popular' internet gaming sites. I'd rather listen to peoples views here at DC-Talk !

I 100% agree with you. I did this mainly out of curiosity. It doesn't at all change my opinion about the Dreamcast. It's still my favorite system of all time!Neohound wrote:Interesting read but ultimately I take it with a pinch of salt. whole heartedly agree mate, and good shout with Project Justice, I can't believe I never mentioned that one lately, that was one of my top 5 3d fighting games on the DC along with Soul Calibur, Tech Romancer, Psychic Force 2012 and one other which I can't.... actually.... think off, dammit I forget lol, anyway yeah I agree big time

Re: Dreamcast vs. This Generation (How it stacks up)
I think it's also noteworthy that Soul Calibur was not a 1st party game and the majority of other titles, namely the Mario titles, are all 1st party produced. With that in mind, and considering many 1st party titles are reviewed more favorably by magazines that solely support that company, it more than emphaisizes the fact that Soul Calibur is nearly unmatched in terms of quality.

Re: Dreamcast vs. This Generation (How it stacks up)
I think the only thing that tarnished the holy name of Soul Calibur was the abismal port to XBLA, no wide screen support, no mission mode, NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER!!! Sloppy cheap crap job port or what
