Guilty Pleasures

Post by Neohound »

Has anyone got any Dreamcast guilty pleasures ?

I suppose videogaming is a guilty pleasure in itself (to some people) but, whatever, I'm interested in DC-specific ones.

My own would include a liking for Vigilante 8. Yes, I realise most gamers think it's rubbish but I love it to bits. I love the environments/maps, the music, the vehicles, pretty much everything about it. I've kept this quiet for too long, but now my secrets out and you know something ? I don't feel guilty about it so much now

Haha wow! You serious? That was the BEST vehicular combat game ever imho. I loved the first on Ps1, and was glad to see they included all maps from the first game in the second one for DC with advanced graphics and resolution.

I even bought the remake on Xbox live if you ever want to play it online? I think it cost 800 ms points.

I always wanted to play the DC version online. Too bad the servers are down.

I like Vigilante 8, seeing that Vigilante 8 is a spin off of interstate 76 (I really loved that game), yeah i like Vigilante 8 its just not as good as interstate 76. although i wish that they made interstate 76 or even interstate 82 on dreamcast.

I also beta tested a mod for Battlefield 2 called ISNitro, which was a spin off of the PC Interstate games.

I never realised the game was so well liked ! A lot of reviews I read at the time didn't rate very highly so I'm quite surprised.

You two, you do realise you totally ruined my thread now :!:

Erm, another game............

Ah yes, Dragon Riders:Chronicles Of Pern :) Everytime I play this I hear the terrible reviews ringing in my ears, they almost put me off playing it at all. But not quite. You see, I think if this game had have had a few months of tweaking, it would have become known as the British Shenmue. As it is though, it's many flaws keep it from reaching that status. A poorly implemented combat system really does let it down. Don't get me wrong though, it's still a very good game with a good story, varied characters and superb graphics. A lot has been said about L.A.Noire's realistic facial expressions - well they were a big part of the developement for this game and that was eleven years ago ! The gameplay is quite varied and enjoyable and some of the settings are very memorable.

I'd urge you to play this one through. If you're a DC connoisseur then I recommend that you take in what this game has to offer, ignore it's shortcomings, and just enjoy the experience. A guilty pleasure indeed.

I'd have to say Sonic Shuffle. It's actually a pretty good game. The computer players are ruthless but if you're playing against real people it's not bad. It also makes very good use of the VMU showing your cards on it. It actually took me a while to figure out the cards were on the VMU!
PSO Characters:
Teal'c - lvl 119 HUcast - GC# 11666
Alto - lvl 39 FOnewm - GC# 12964

I have been meaning to try out Dragon Riders for about 2 years now. If the graphics are that good then I am in for a real treat.

Did Tux ever release a copy of the game optimized?

pcwzrd13, I hope you feel REALLY GUILTY

Nah, I don't mean it lol

I must admit that I never really gave it a chance, it was so slated that I just presumed it was crap. I always thought it looked great though and as you say, the vmu/cards thing was a neat idea.

Definitely a good choice as a Guilty Pleasure :)

Anthony817, not sure about the The Tux(or anybody else's) release......maybe someone else can answer that.

The developement team made the DC and PC versions at the same time rather than porting it over. The result is a DC optimised game which will have you wondering why other adventure games on the DC looked so rough. The graphics are very solid(no pop up), smooth and detailed with some nice and large environments. Like I said earlier, the characters have real faces(literally) and realistic facial expressions. There are some amazing set-pieces also. Some of the sequences are overused and get a bit repetative with long loading times but these are minor flaws and shouldn't really detract from the game.

Just play it and see what you think :)

No worries, go for it. It's a long game so you have to put in the hours, but it's worth it in the end ;)
