Re: Guilty Pleasures
I'll have to add Slave Zero. I bought it a while back but just played it for the first time. It's actually quite fun. Yeah, it has framerate issues but it never slows down so much that it's unplayable (but it does get pretty bad when there are a lot of enemies). The main thing is I'm having fun playing it and that's all that counts right?

Re: Guilty Pleasures
I charge you with the 1998 Dreamcast Act, that you are indulging in GUILTY pleasures !
It's not that it's all bad though, in fact when you change to the first person view it tranforms the game. Much better framerate and altogether more enjoyable. Not many folks mention this game when comparing fps on the Dreamcast, I think they just forgot it existed ! lol It's a simple concept for a game compared to the latest fps but I personally think that it's basic gameplay is it's strong point and that is where the fun is at.
Good choice, I'll have to try and think of some more of my own

Re: Guilty Pleasures
Hmmm, I'll have to try that. Although the controls probably wouldn't be very good in first person I would imagine. It took me a while just to get used to the third person controls. This game would have benefited a lot from keyboard and mouse support.Neohound wrote: It's not that it's all bad though, in fact when you change to the first person view it tranforms the game. Re: Guilty Pleasures
Virtua Striker.
When I was a child I used to go the this arcade that had an old version (new at that time) of virtua striker and it was so awesome, I played that game almost every day after school.
So today, even though I have pro evolution soccer 2012 for my ps3, I still play some virtua striker on the dream.

That's a really good shout as it's a common misconception that ALL Dreamcast soccer games are shit !daniel116 wrote:Virtua Striker.

Virtua Striker may have been over the top 'Seganess' , but that's what makes it so much fun imo.
A true guilty pleasure I'd say

Would have been nice to have a version of Winning Eleven/Pro Evo on the DC

Re: Guilty Pleasures
Yeah that's one of the only flaws I can find in the dreamcast, not having good soccer games.
Virtua Striker is very fun but the games are like 3 minutes long and there's not a lot of depth to it, it's too much arcade to be enjoyed for more than 30 minutes at a time

Sega Worldwide Soccer Euro Edition plus the later UEFA Dream were both decent games for their time. Uefa Dream had women players and teams, I'm not sure if that's been done since ?
Before 90 Minutes was released, it was touted as being the best Dreamcast soccer game. The development team had former members of the ISS games in it. However, it was generally panned by both critics and Dreamcast fans for it's poor graphics and terrible gameplay. I suspect the game was rushed out and half-assed due to the impending demise of the console. Wasn't it a Smilebit game ? I can't believe they even lent their name to the project !
You know it's quite possible that having a killer footy game on the DC would have saved it from the axe. I guess we'll never know.

Re: Guilty Pleasures
OK, I'm ready to run away after admitting this: I like Kao The Kangaroo. There, I said it.
The Dreamcast has three premier platformers which many rate very highly. The japanese SA1 & 2 plus the french Rayman 2. But the antipodean marsupial Kao seems to get panned whenever he gets mentioned. I just don't think that's fair as the game he stars in has a lot to offer. It's bright and colourful, has lots of cool levels plus many and varied gameplay ideas.
I know it's not to everyones taste but then again I guess that's why it's one of my guilty pleasures.
*runs away*...... well to the kitchen to make a cuppa

Re: Guilty Pleasures
Here's a game that has a reputation of being either loved or hated by gamers: Vanishing Point.
Ok, it splits opinion like a sabre coming down the centre of a ripened pineapple, but i'm definitely in the 'love it' half. To me it's a true guilty pleasure, one that I've been indulging in since it's release and it's a goal of mine to make sure that it gets a chance to be remembered fondly rather than having a reputation only slightly better than Spirit Of Speed (oh dear).
The first thing you notice in the game is the appearance. This game is stunning to look at and rock solid to boot. Think F355 and Le Mans 24hrs for comparisons. Graphically, this sits alongside those games with ease. The car models, tracks, lighting are all exceptional and provide a pretty special and colourful spectacle. One memorable track has you driving through a village, church bells ringing, chasing an express steam train as it hurles through the countryside - memorable stuff.
So why is hated so much ? Well it's simple, this game is HARDCORE. You can't expect to be driving an AC Cobra from the start, you'll be given a snail-paced truck to begin with. When you've got to grips with the game you'll be rewarded, that's how it progresses throughout the whole game. Eventually, it builds up to such a crescendo that all the early frustration vanishes (see what I said there
). At it's climax, if your you're man enough, this game equals the best in the Burnout series for thrills, spills and raw excitement.
The handling of the cars will have some people chucking their controller at the wall, but I love it. Going round corners at full pelt on only two wheels is a brilliant feeling and NOT a flaw ! It does take some learning and skill to master it but then that's part of the fun.
The games also sports some of the best minigames around and is reminiscent of Crazy Taxi in that respect.
So have I convinced anyone to give it a try ? Go on, treat yourself ! Though if enough people are turned on to it's charms, it would no longer count as a guilty pleasure lol
