Have you ever purposefully horded stuff away?

Post by Macabre »

Not really off topic since I was thinking of doing this with some DC/sega stuff.

I realized that I have a tendency to "rotate" back to some of my older hobbies that I've forgotten about or lost interest in, simply by relocating some stuff related to those hobbies.

For example, I used to play mtg a lot around a decade ago, but haven't really put much in to the game until just recently when I re-found my decks & collection.

Its fun again, although I'm unsure for how long it will hold my appetite.

When the Sega Saturn came out, I actually had all of my genesis/32x/cd stuff stored away in a foot locker that I had completely forgotten about until I moved from home to school, and found it when taking things with me. It completely revitalized my love for that system simply because I had forgotten about it for so long.

I'm thinking about doing this on purpose now. I don't like the idea of ditching 100% of my sega stuff and games, but I have many backup systems, and an impressive library, as well as specific games that I play often...

What I was thinking was storing 98% of my collection, and leaving basically a skeleton crew of games out for each system, for example just PSO for DC, just battle garegga for Saturn, and maybe a cartridge or two for just the basic genesis unit (no upgrades).

That way, after a decade, I will have had my fill with the current generation systems, and then be able to fall back in love with my Sega awesomeness again..

I don't know if I'd go as far as storing stuff away but I do find myself losing interest in systems all the time. I usually just don't play them for a while and then something will make me want to play them again. Usually it's something like watching a YouTube video or reading an article about that system and it makes me want to play it again. This is one of the reasons I started Dreamcast Live. It keeps things fresh and interesting with the Dreamcast and gives me incentive to try new games or refreshes my interest in games I haven't played in a while. A great example would be the current competition game, Wetrix+. It's a really fun and addictive puzzle game that I might never have taken a second look at if it wasn't suggested to me for a competition. Anyway, I don't see much point in boxing up the systems. Why not just take a break from playing them for a while? Wait until something sparks your interest again.

I am the same way as pcwzrd.

I'd also like to get in on these dclive contests as soon as I get myself a tv ;)
Sounds like a fun incentive to replay my fav dc games, and show off at the same time ;)

I lended my dreamcast for a friend so he can finish shenmue and it took him so long to give it back to me that when I finally did get it back it felt like I was using the dreamcast for the first time again, what a wonderful feeling!

I have issues like this too lol, quite often I will have to go rummaging for something again and I'll come across my old comic binders or collectors cards binders or an old console I haven't used in years. For instance recently I had my Jaguar out again because I went through my boxes and I ended up purchasing a truck load of stuff for it, now I'm going back to my Saturn and that's going to be positioned in the living room now strategically so I can get some play in on that as I have just bought Guardian Heroes, Alien Trilogy and Metal Black, and I have master system and mega drive emulators on my DC so I am never far from any of them but I always end up rotating the console I'm interested in that's not either my DC or 360 lol, both of those will be forever in pride of place

I have definitely got the hoarding gene, one step away from a squirrel. Especially Dreamcast stuff, I packed everything I owned into boxes in the loft around 2003 only to dig them out a few years later when Under Defeat got released. They went back in the loft only to see the light of day again when I joined DC-Talk. Now I've got more space, I think I'll always have a Dreamcast set up though.

I've got loads of Home movie cine films from the 1990's. I only get them out occasionally so they don't get boring and still seem interesting to watch.

lol, wow home movie cine films? does that mean the kind of home movie films that you have to run via a massive cinema style projector? that reminds me of the bit in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation when Griswald gets stuck in the attic, is freezing and goes in a box to find clothes, finds old home movies and sits there in an old womans nighty with gloves on watching old family vids... awesome lol

I horde my DC stuff but I refuse to buy games I consider to be shit or something I won't ever play. So for example I wont buy a game like buzz lightyear or 101 dalmations, or Japanese dating sims, I don't care about getting a full collection, just a nice, consistently awesome one will do me :) same for all my other consoles
