Question about the dreamcast arcade stick

Post by dark »

Does the joystick part of the arcade stick map to the Dpad or the joystick on the standard gamepad? IE: If I wanted to use it for say, Tokyo Xtreme Racer or Sonic Adventure, which only does steering and movement through the joystick and not the Dpad on the controller, would I be able to use the arcade stick to play the game? Or is the arcade stick basically only good for fighting games?

I don't have one to test, myself.

And what is the pricing for the official ones? (with the green joystick and buttons) I see them listed for $80 and $90 sometimes, but never see them sell. Could I ever expect to find one for maybe $20 or $30?

So I have a saturn>dreamcast controller adapter so I thought I'd take a quick look at sega saturn arcade sticks...

Stumbled upon this ridiculous thing. The cool factor is only slightly outweighed by the $300 going rate, and the fact that it would cost another $200 to ship it internationally (looks like probably a Jpn only item)

At that rate, I might as well just buy a naomi cabinet :)

I believe the DC arcade stick is digital so that would mean that its joystick mapped as a Dpad. I also would think it's mapped as such simply cuz when a Ascii Fight Pad is used on a game like say Capcom Vs. SNK, it recognizes it as an official DC Arcade Stick. What!? only for fighters??? NO. It's Perfect for Shmups (insert shmup game here lol!), Puzzlers (Puyo, Tetris 4D, Bust a Move 4), Beat em Ups (Dynamite Cop) and various NAOMI ports that deem it adequate (Virtua Striker 2, Power Smash, Zombie Revenge).

Pricing varies on condition and if it's complete with box which commands a higher price. On average though $50 and no higher than $60 is a fair price (and well worth the price IMO). I recently got 2 this year for around the $50 range. $20 or $30 is doubtful. But you may luck out. I found my very first one for only $10 bucks back in the day at a flea market in decent condition. I got real lucky :)

Yeah, that's why 90% of Dreamcast shmups have NO FUCKING analog support. Seriously, what the hell were they thinking?

I know when I first got my DC back in 00 I wasn't used to analogs either, hell I grew up on Dpads so it felt weird to me, but when I got on Xbox all games use them so I am more used to them now.

When I hear of a new Shmup release, the first thing I ask, "Will it have analog support". ;)

I wish I could just buy that ascii fight pad, that thing is shaped like the Saturn model 2 controllers, and its perfect for fighters and emulators.

The reason why the Saturn dual arcade stick costs so much is because of the metal faceplate. It is the only worthwhile dual player arcade stick that you can build a wooden cabinet with.

I would recommend getting a Total Control Plus (about $20) and a PS2 Street Fighter Anniversary Controller ($10-$30).

Here is new Chun Li one for $15. http://www.estarland.com/Playstation2.c ... 20163.html

If you really, really want an arcade stick for casual play, get a Total Control Plus and buy a working ps2 stick from ebay (I recommend the Tekken 5 stick). I really like the agetec "green goblin" but they are about 10 years old and you'll need to replace the stick/buttons soon which is about $50 in parts and $50 in labor to pay someone to install them (solder the wires, grind the button holes bigger, etc.)

For a quality stick, either mod the agetec or get one built with a multi-system board (Cthulhu).
Keep dreaming.

Yeah the Octopus/Dragon thing that lives in the Pacific Ocean.

I'm kidding.

A guy named Toodles created a board that uses an RJ45 outlet (ethernet). So you can buy/make cords that are RJ45 on one side and PS3, Xbox1, PS2/PSX, Saturn, Dreamcast, Gamecube, SNES, NES, OR TG-16 on the other side.

Here is a beginner guide to making an Arcade Stick with a Cthulhu board
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/blog.php?b=5037

Here is a Cthulhu board from Lizardlick
http://www.lizardlick.com/Toodles-Cthul ... p_542.html

A friend of mine has a Madkatz TE stick for the 360 and easily replaced the PCB with this Cthulhu made just for it:
http://www.lizardlick.com/Toodles-TE-Ki ... p_630.html

He does not have a dreamcast/RJ45 cord yet but he has cords for his 360, PS3 and PS2 and they work!

Thus, if you are going to spend a lot of money on an arcade stick, I would invest in a Cthulu arcade stick so you can play dreamcast and any other system just by switching the cords.

I believe it is also Toodles who sells a $20 mod to change your joystick with springs into a full optical one.

There are a ton of arcade sticks that are above average for the system. The stock on is a great starter that you can easily modify with quality arcade parts.

I have a collection I'm currently building display videos around to share. I'll post a link shortly.

Currently my favorite for the dreamcast would be my interact alloy stick (very fancy and heavy stick), closly followed by my modified official stick (I stuck a Saturn controller inside the stick for the sanwa parts to work with with a total control adapter. I can switch on the stick if I want to play dreamcast or Saturn with it, and just plug in that respective extension cord.)

I agree. If you want an arcade stick just for the dreamcast, buy the green goblin and mod it. It's a great stick especially with the metal base. However, if you are just starting your dreamcast collection and have a 360/ps3/ps2, I would still recommend a cthulu since you can use your stick for all your systems.
Keep dreaming.

I will buy the ASCII stick eventually, I know I will, but just when I have cash to blow, like income tax time lol.

That's why I say the ASCII fighter pad is best for most gamers, it works with emulators, fighters, shmups, and anything else that needs a D-pad only.
