Dreamcast Future

Post by Neohound »

A bit late to start a New Year topic............but I will anyway ;)

Where do you see the Dreamcast's future ? Have you any special wishes, predictions or hopes for it ?

Where do you see yourself and your DC being at in a year or even five years time ?

Finally, what do hope to see happen to the DC community or even Dreamcast-Talk ?

-Sturmwind will come out, Gunlord will come out. Geist Force will be leaked. If NG Dev Team has another neogeo based game in the works, we will probably see that for DC as well in the next two years. No new commercial games obviously with the naomi system being pushed out of arcades and sega refusing to give their seal of approval on anything dreamcast or GDrom related. I think there will be a few more surprises in terms of another indie game or two that no one knows about yet, in the next two years. Now that the DC technology is even more obsolete by modern standards, and indie development is in some ways more difficult than for most of the other consoles, we're going to see less interest in developing for dreamcast. I don't think 2012 will be the last year for indie releases, and nostolgia is a compelling factor sometimes, but I think releases might become something more like one every 3 or 5 years after 2013. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised though.

-I'm going to buy more commercial games this year. In 5 years time, I won't play it much (don't even play it much now), but I'll still have my DC collection. And I'll be proud of it, just like now, 11 years after I got my DC.

Finally, what do hope to see happen to the DC community or even Dreamcast-Talk ?

-I think the DC community will stay at the trickle it is now. In the last 5 years, I've noticed plenty of people come into the community as collectors, and also first time owners of used systems-kids who were way too young to have owned the DC when it came out and are checking it out as it really is a neat little "forgotten" system in the mainstream mind. I think that will stay the case. I don't think we will see lots of increased homebrew development.

I think that's a pretty good appraisal of the Dreamcast's future. Not that optimistic, but honest at least. Even though the community is dwindling year on year I think there's still stuff to talk about, games to collect, things to look forward to.

I'd like to think there will be some more unreleased games coming to light. And there are still a few DC games I need to finish playing.

The Dreamcast years are full of my happiest gaming moments. I don't think I'll ever fall out of love with the system but gradually until death do us part..........

Lately, being a "geek" suddenly became popular, and you see a lot of celebrities "admitting" they play video games, you see a lot of shows on TV that have people playing video games on some episodes (Entourage, the Big Bang Theory, South Park and more) and a lot of movies that are inspired by video games like Scott Pilgim.
Also, being "retro" or "old school" is also something that gained huge popularity over the last few years, you can't walk down the street without seeing people wearing 90's shirts.
So what I'm getting at is that I think there's a small chance that maybe, one day, someone will make a movie that will have a scene of someone using a dreamcast because someone in the production crew of the movie thought this will appeal to gamers cause it's so old school and not mainstream like ps3 or x360.
Then, after the movie becomes a huge success, people will start looking for that esoteric video game console they saw and the weird game called shenmue it was playing.
Eventually it will lead to Dreamcast 2 and Shenmue 3.
questions?

Reminded me of the Dreamcast cameo in The Forbidden Kingdom.
