I was playing Assassin's Creed on the PS3 and I got on a roof top and looked at the city from above, I was really amazed at how good it looked and how far we've gotten with video games, but then when I went back to Shenmue I realized that I am 1000 times more amazed at how far Sega got with Shenmue over 10 years ago.
No matter how big and detailed they'll make open cities in today's games, I'll always feel that doing those things today is easy, but making a city as big and as detailed as Shenmue's cities back then is the real achievement.
It's like, you know how today every movie has a car chase scene or a big shootout with explosions? it's not impressive anymore, but think about how impressive the special effects and action scenes in Terminator 2 were!
Anyone else just can't enjoy today's games?

Most new games suck shit. Sure they look pretty but the gameplay is aimed at the average idiot with a 30 second attention span.

Re: I Don't Enjoy Current Generation Games
Up until the end of the PS2 era, for a game to be called epic it had to be a really one of a kind game, but today creating "epic" games with mind blowing graphics and a completely new environment in every level you pass is so easy, it's like it lost it's meaning.
I was trying to explain to a friend of mine, who is an avid ps3 gamer, what a game with a soul is and a few days later he comes to me and tells me that Infamous for the PS3 is a game with a soul cause it's so fun!
BITCH I cried in Shenmue and you're talking about fun?!

Current games can be very enjoyable but you might have to try odd titles. For this generation my top title is Deadly Premonition .It was one hell of a game.To be honest it can even best some past classic titles. While the trailer below is for the proto type version. the finished game is pretty much still the same.I gotta say id prefer this over shenmue if this game would have been possible on the dreamcast.

Re: I Don't Enjoy Current Generation Games
I agree that the generation of consoles that included the Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox is quite a tough act to follow but there are some good games this gen (pretty much every generation has some games that stand out). I do want a life outside and after the Dreamcast............
I haven't really involved myself in this generation's bandwagon and it's taken me a while to build up a collection but, with some advice from people here and elsewhere, I am pretty pleased with the quality of the games I've played and purchased so far.
I'm not saying all of these are AAA classic titles, and I'm no expert (just tapped the surface), but they are certainly a level up from the average:
Deadly Premonition (I agree - top game)
Silent Hill Homecoming
Rockstar Table Tennis
Test Drive Unlimited
Dirt
Eternal Sonata
Prey
L.A. Noire
Rayman Origins
Tales Of Vesperia
Uncharted series
Tomb Raider Underworld
Skyward Sword
Blue Dragon
Child Of Eden
El Shaddai
Dead Space 1 & 2
Mass Effect series
Mirrors Edge (elmagicochrisg, I bought this for £1.99 the other day ! I'm taking your word it's ok lol)
Are any of them as good as Shenmue 1 & 2 ? No ! Is the Dreamcast still my number one ? Yes !
But why keep yourself blinkered to the rest of the world's talent just because you fancy one person above all ?

Yup, it's good to fuck around every now and then. As long as you keep coming home to your loved one...Neohound wrote:But why keep yourself blinkered to the rest of the world's talent just because you fancy one person above all ?
Just don't forget to shower afterwards. She can smell those Sony, Nintendo and Microsluts from afar...

I know what you mean they seem to have sacrificed game content for graphics.

Re: I Don't Enjoy Current Generation Games
I know exactly what you mean but I've found a different way of looking at it from trying to explain it to friends who don't understand all the Dreamcast love. I think the difference is from the 360 alone. I used to enjoy consoles but I've always been a big PC gamer (hell I still am). Game consoles always had a distinctly Eastern vibe and the market consisted of J-RPGs and arcade ports (because arcade games also had an Eastern feel, shmups, fighters, etc.). I always saw value in having a PC and a good console because of this; I would get the best of both worlds, FPS vs. 2d shooters, J-RPGs vs. Bioware style Western RPGs, and so on. Now with the 360 dominating the market in America all we see are Western style games on consoles. The fact that they've become repetitious and formulaic devalues them as well but there really isn't a reason to choose between PC or console anymore since they satisfy the same market. I choose PC because the hardware will always be superior (even though no one takes use of it anymore, I'm still waiting on a game to beat Crysis from a graphical standpoint) but I'm glad I did so because the indie PC gaming market has been booming! I'm not talking about trash like Bastion but rather games like AI war, Super Laser Racer, Swarm Arena, and Tidalis. Digital Distribution outlets like Steam has made this easy so we still see unique games on the PC but if you talk to any game designers they will tell you how constricted and archaic the rules and standards of XBox live arcade are and why they are unable to make their dream game on such a platform. As far as Dreamcast goes I love it because of the vibrant colors, the unique games, the Eastern feel and so on. I find new games to be almost depressing; they tend to favor a darker color palette, darker themes, and a less enticing world. Playing PC games (mainstream ones) for a long period of time tends to make me feel almost sad, even the good ones. I'm currently playing Evolution on the Dreamcast, I'm 21, have a kid, experience the harshness of the real world, and I don't mind playing a game where the main characters are little kids painted in bright colors with spiky hair because it makes me feel relaxed and at peace.
