Favorite Shmups list! (In order!!)

Post by BrianC »

There are certain Shmups on the DC that get a lot of attention and some for very good reason. I wanted to see what people ranked as their favorite shmups so I'm going to do a quick list of my favorites from favorite (1.) to least favorite and give a short description of why I thought certain games deserved the ranking they received. Feel free to do the same in any format that you see fit :D

1. Border Down - Brilliant music, literally my all time favorite game soundtrack. A cool concept, the border system, that can sometimes be frustrating but once mastered it adds limitless potential and depth to the game. A game that is hard to survive but even harder to play for score. A remix mode that changes the enemy designs and patterns across every level and sub-level as well as a lot of difficulty levels. This game is incredible but only if you are really willing to give it the time to grow on you.
2. Psyvariar 2 - The only shmup I haven't reached the (real) final level in and for good reason. It is so intense that it hurts my hand after about 30 minutes of gameplay :D . The game gives you the option to play as a standard Shmup (shoot type) or an even cooler variation (buzz type). The buzz system works so well that it makes the game feel like something other than a shmup, almost like a beautiful dance game or some shit like that. Poetry isn't my thing but this game deserves the attempt!
3. Mars Matrix - A game that can be played in a lot of different ways. Two different ships that each have two different shot types that need to be interchanged constantly for best results and the unique bomb system makes this game a complete blast. The experience system is incredible and the difficulty is top notch.
4. Trizeal - By this point you might be wondering "he's at number 4 and ikaruga hasn't been listed yet?!!?! Will it make the top 5?" to which the answer is No since it is everything that Trizeal is not and everything that makes Trizeal feel incredibly fresh. Trizeal is a shooter, not a bullet hell. The game does not rely on a set "win pattern". There is no one way to play and memorization will only take you so far since (sound the drum roll please) the enemies actually shoot at you! While this was a pretty common feature of early shmups its pretty rare in this day and age and it makes the game so much fun and so difficult despite the relatively small amount of bullets coming at you.
5. Castle Shikigami 2 - Castle Shikigami 2 does not attempt anything new but rather mimics other styles near perfectly to make a crazy ultra game. You have a ton of characters with tons of different moves that have either been done before or have not but almost every character works in almost every situation. There is a buzz system present throughout as well even if it isn't as grandiose as Psyvariar 2. The level design and enemy design help make this game a cut above the rest. I'm going to find a video of the "puzzle-boss" later, it is fucking awesome!

Well, that's it for now but I could easily do a 6-10 and so on, I love my shmups :D

1. Ikaruga - even if its a cliche to put it this high, this game really had awesome graphics and really paved the way for the other shooters on the console. This game was really ahead of its time in terms of graphics, gameplay and overall presentation. It felt so fresh and impressive at the time, I remember turning over to my brother the first time playing it and remarking that this game single handedly proves that the DC can compete with the best that the PS2 has to offer (circa 2002/2003) The light/dark concept kept the gameplay fresh, and the music and aesthetics were cool

2. Chaos Field - love the soundtrack, and I like the idea that I don't have to wade through "waves" of enemies, rather I can progress as quickly as I can kill the current boss - meaning once I get to a good skill level, I can get through the first few levels very quickly to focus on the latter parts of the game where I die too much

3. Zero Gunner 2 - this was really fun in multiplayer, and the rotation aspect made the game feel fresh and not just like a bullet dodging or space invaders kind of game.

4. Castle Shikigami 2 - I enjoyed the graphics, music, and the fact you were playing as people instead of space ships. Also the people with their different abilities really changed the gameplay and strategies for me when choosing different characters. The BG graphics looked really really good in this game, imo.

5. Gigawing 2 - The soundtrack just kicks ass, it's also 4 players, and is the only 3d shooter I know of (maybe only shooter actually) which is 4 players like this. A nice showcase for the DC multiplayer and graphics-wise. I like the forcefield concept and enjoyed it in Gigawing 1, but the unlimited continues right from the get go don't give this the lasting or challenging appeal of any of the previously mentioned games.

Honorable mentions:
6) Karous - I like the graphical style and I'm glad the DC went out with a creative concept like this. The music is really cool too and I'm not even a real fan of DnB

7) Under Defeat - it's definitely a quality game, I feel like the helicopter hitboxes are larger than they should be, I find myself dying from bullets I think are missing me...

8) Borderdown - impressive graphics but I haven't spent the time and gotten good enough at this game to make it past the early level inside the mine XD It's very difficult

And if REZ belongs on this list as a rail shooter - I'd put it above Ikaruga as number 1 - another brilliant game, impressive graphics and presentation and a creative concept.

Set the difficulty way down in Border Down just to see the rest of it! Its worth it :D the game actually has like 6 different ending levels but I've only seen one because I kind of suck at the game but I'm slowly getting better lol. I completely agree with your thoughts on Ikaruga, its actually the game that got me into shmups in about '03 when it came out on the Gamecube. My only issue is that there is one way to play it, one set path through the whole game that everyone who is good at the game takes. Its kind of a big turn off for me but the presentation and idea behind it are superb. I think as far as graphics goes it would be Under Defeat, Triggerheart, Shikigami and then Ikaruga. Under Defeat is the most technically perfect game on the DC IMO, everything is beautiful and no detail is ever spared in that game. Sadly it is too easy even at its highest level of difficulty plus the 2-x levels but I really do enjoy the gameplay, it would probably be 7 on my list after Ikaruga at 6 :D

Wow ! You lot obviously know your stuff when it comes to DC shmups. I myself am a complete noob regarding traditional 2d shootemups(I presume that's what we're talking about). I have started to collect them, but am still only halfway through my quest, so there are quite a few games in the genre I've never played.

So with my limited experience I'd have to say:

1: Armada. I have only played maybe an hour of this which I imported from the US last year some time. I love the concept and the execution is spot on. It feels fresh but also very retro, I'm not sure what the kids of today would think of it but I would have loved to play this online - it has all the ingredients to make it a classic.

2: Karous. One word - MUSIC ! I just loved this game when it came out and it was one of the first times I had my DC hooked up to a decent sound system. I played it to death with the volume UP...... and then even higher UP !! The neighbours wouldn't talk to me anymore but I didn't care, I was in gaming heaven. The art style gets a lot of bad press. Why ? I have no idea, to me it looks great and a bit different in tone to other games of this ilk.

3: Under Defeat. One of the first games I played on the DC was a demo of Incoming and I remember thinking "This is cool, HELICOPTERS ARE COOL !!". So when I played Under Defeat I just knew I'd like it. Even though the concept is old skool, it has these amazing graphics with unbelievable attention to detail. The effects, particularly the smoke and explosions, are nothing short of mind blowing. Yes, it's over too quickly, and yes, it's nothing revolutionary in concept, but who cares ? It's FANTASTIC FUN.......which is what games of this genre should be, right ?

Honourable mention: Gigawing. I love Steam Punk. Nuff said.

You know what pisses me off? I had a friend who watched me play Raiden 3 and he wouldn't shut up about how crazy it was, he was going on and on "you're so good, that was so badass!". Well anyways, Raiden 3 is fuck easy so later I show him Border Down and he's just sitting there silent and eventually says "don't you think this game is a bit too easy for someone with your skill?". I wanted to hit him haha it doesn't look hard but it is probably one of the hardest shmups ever made.

@CD Really! Fast Striker seemed so bland that I never spent any real time with it. Would you say it grows on you and has hidden potential or have you just always liked it?

@Neo Armada kicks ass! I guess I never thought of it as a shmup but in many ways it is :D I really wish that game could still be played online.

Yes FS! Umm, I liked the game from the get go but as I spend more time with it I began to love and appreciate it more than ever before. The 16 bit visuals are dated yes but quite retro and remind me of Mars Matrix. The music is perfect in how it compliments the gameplay IMO. Finally the Replay value and accessability is unrivaled. Every diffculty level has its own set of rules and scoring system for any shmup fan.
