help with Giana's Return

I've downloaded the 1.0 and 1001 versions of Giana's Return. Both burn fine, and boot up in my DC. There's a little warning screen that comes up and tells you to "press left then right" to start the game. However nothing I do works. It's as if the game doesn't recognize that I'm pressing buttons. I've tried left and right on the dpad, the analog stick, the shoulder buttons. Tried pressing one then the other, tried pressing one and keeping it help while I press the other, and tried the controller in every port. Nothing. WTF?
